Objection: The action of challenging evidence or questions. • Sustained: A judge agreeing that an attorney's objection is valid and evidence in question will not be allowed in court. • Overruled: Judge allows the question or evidence in court that had been the subject of an objection. • Opening statement:  An introductory statement made by the attorneys for each side at the start of a trial. • Closing statement:  The final argument made by each attorney on both sides of a case in a trial prior to a verdict. Contempt of court:  Disrespect for the rules of a court. • Plaintiff: Person that is bringing a case to court against somebody. • Defendant: Person that is defending themselves against charges in a case. • Direct examination:  The initial questioning of a witness by the side that called him or her to testify. • Cross examination: The interrogation of a witness by the party opposed to the one who called the witness. • Verdict: The formal decision made by the jury.
