  1. Velocity Where are you going and how fast will you get there

  2. Velocity • Two factors of velocity • Speed • Direction West 50 MPH

  3. Displacement • To take the place of or remove from the usual or proper place. • Requires a point of reference Displacement

  4. Speed • Speed = Distance / Time • Example: • Dog runs 5 meters in 10 seconds. What is his speed? • 5/10 = 0.5 m/s • This is an example of average speed. • Other examples would be athletes for track or football being timed over a set distance. 10 5

  5. Time Distance Graph Student A Student B

  6. Instantaneous and Average Speed • Instantaneous: The speed of an object at one instant of time • Average Speed: Found by dividing the total distance traveled by total time taken

  7. Lab 10.1 • You move the man left and right by changing the velocity. By placing a (-) symbol in front of the velocity the man moves left. By leaving the (+) symbol in front of the velocity the man moves right • 3.2 seconds • 8.1 Seconds • 2.2 seconds

  8. Chapter 10 Section 1 Answers • Speed and Direction • Shown in slide show • 25 – 10 = 15 meters North; 10 – 5 = 5 meters East • 5m/15s = .33 m/s left (West) • 650/300 = 2.17 h
