Governance & Institutional arrangements • Waste Management is done by an entity Pikitup • The CoJ has adopted the Waste Act on waste hierarchy that prioritise reduce and end with disposal. • CoJ through Pikitup works closely with Departments, Private sector and Co-ops to introduces programmes such as Education and Awareness, Waste Separation at Source introducing two colour bin bags, Empowerment of Waste Reclaimers, Establishment of Buy-back Centres within the communities to encourage recycling. • Update of waste legislation has been done to align them with Waste Act. Amongst the legislature updated includes Waste Management Policy and Integrated Waste Plan, Waste Management By-Law. • Pikitup provide the service, and EISD audit and monitor the service provided according to the SLA and submit reports / recommendations.

Economic opportunities (beneficiation) from waste management i.e. recycling, waste-to-energy • Waste Separation at Source • Empowerment of Waste Reclaimers • Establishment of Buyback Centres & Sorting areas • Revive and establish MRFs at Landfill sites • Office Paper, Plastic & Electronic recycling projects ( sustainability) • Green procurement policy and enforcement • Landfill gas to energy, an agreement needs to be entered with City Power once purchase is done. • Alternative Waste Treatment ( future planned)
