By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • recognise a burn or a scald

  • respond appropriately to someone who has a burn or a scald.

  • Chemical burn

  • Dry heat – for example, fire

  • Electrical burn

  • Radiation burn

  • Extreme cold burn.

What you will see:

  • redness

  • swelling

  • blisters

  • charred skin.

What you should do:

  • remove any jewellery

  • apply a sterile dressing or cling film

  • treat the casualty for shock if necessary

  • Dial 999 or 112 for an ambulance if necessary.

Cold running water for 10 minutes minimum.
