WP6 T3 Management and Monitoring Pavle Vuletić, UoB/AMRES TNC19, Tallinn 7C: Multilayered service orchestration and monitoring 18 June 2019
WP6 Task 3: Monitoring and Management • Working with the community (NRENs, GÉANT partners and operators, interested campuses, etc.) to build and maintain a direction for network monitoring and management; • Continued development and evolution of monitoring and management tools and services: • perfSONAR • NMaaS • NetMon • WiFiMon • Performance Measurement Platform - PMP • Campus network monitoring and management ("CNaaS", "CNMaaS") • Incubator – looking for new technologies and monitoring needs, flow monitoring, liaison with other WPs and tasks,…
Quick overview: T3 • The work in this task was defined as the result of 13 different action proposals submitted while the GN4-3 project was being built in 2018 • Several inherited services/developments from previous projects • 28 participants • Approx. 10 FTE • T3 is a small enterprise!
Task organization • Divided into subtasks (dynamic structure): • perfSONAR • PMP • NMaaS • Campus Network Management (CNaaS) • Incubator/NetMon
perfSONAR • Active probing, delay/jitter/loss/throughput measurements • Joint development with ESnet, Indiana University, Internet 2 and University of Michigan • Latest version 4.1, August 2018, 4.2 coming soon • Deployed in GÉANT PoPs and NRENs, PRACE project, DFN network,… • GÉANT is contributing to the development and aims to steer the development of new features • Held 1st European User Workshop earlier this month • https://wiki.geant.org/display/perfSONAR
perfSONAR – new GÉANT developments • New UI and Grafana-based result display
perfSONAR – new development • perfSONAR as a monitoring station for the CNaaS service • Performing dns and http monitoring with perfSONAR • Using ELK to display the data
PMP – Performance Measurement Platform • Former perfSONAR small node project; small measurement boxes given to NRENs • Monitoring throughput, loss, latency and path • Project plan: expand the footprint to 20 new locations and cover at least 80% of European NRENs • Covering 19 NRENs at the beginning of the project • Now 25 NRENs, with 4 boxes delivered at this TNC • Held PMP training here on Sunday • There is also a demo at the GÉANT booth • If you want to host a PMP node, and do not already, please get in touch
NMaaS – Network Management as a Service • Provide containerised network management applications for less developed or resource constrained NRENs/end institutions • A production GÉANT service having passed its PLM gate • Next actions: • Explore the use of NMaaS for campus network management • Expand the service user base and the set of supported applications (CYNET, DFN FAU) • Yearly service review
NMaaS tools • LibreNMS • Oxidized • NAV • OpenNTI • Prometheus • Grafana • And adding more…
WiFiMon • Crowd-sourced (user based) WiFi monitoring (using NetTest, boomerang and speedworker) • Added hybrid approach – using rPi v3 devices • Added radius (eduroam) log correlation in order to allow per AP or per user monitoring • We are monitoring the WiFi network (our devices only) at TNC19 – the first results will be shown on Thursday @14:00 in Tower room in a separate side event – Come and visit us!
Campus Network Management as a Service (CNaaS) • A new proposal (SUNET, UNINETT) • Automation of outsourced network management functions for campuses • Service definition • Software architecture • Campus network monitoring
T3 Incubator • Looking for new topics in monitoring and management, recent research and commercial developments • Undertook a “NetMon vs perfSONAR” analysis; now determining next steps • Flow monitoring proposal (Nordunet) - DONE • Monitoring @ 100G • Low Latency and jitter monitoring - LoLa – working with WP6 T1 • Programmable network features for monitoring (P4, ebpf, netronome cards) • Zero footprint monitoring: Monitoring functions on network elements or virtual machines on network elements for monitoring (virtual Juniper and Cisco XE devices)
