  2. Negro League Baseball • Shut out of Major League baseball by the Gentleman’s agreement in the 1880’s, Black players sought to create leagues of their own • In the 1930’s, while white baseball struggled during the great depression, the Negro League’s expanded and did very well

  3. Negro League Baseball • Leroy “Satchel” Paige- Most dominant player in the Leagues, possibly had 300 shutouts in his career and pitched 2500 games? Played on many different teams/barnstorming teams. Crowds came to get a glimpse of him on the mound. In 1948 oldest rookie in MLB history at 42. Played in All Star game in 1952-53.

  4. Negro League Baseball • Josh Gibson- black baseball’s best homerun hitter. (Black Babe Ruth) Hit 86 homeruns in 1936 and possibly 900+ for his career. Died at 35 in 1946, one year before baseball is integrated.
