  2. Early Life • He was born in December on 1875 • Raised in New Canton, Virginia • Son of former slaves • He was one of 9 children

  3. His Family • His parents were James and Eliza (Riddle) Woodson • His grandparents, father, and mother were all slaves • His mother secretly learned how to read while she was a slave and taught her children how to read as well

  4. Woodson’s Accomplishments • He was known as the father of Black History Month • Graduated with honors from Berea College in 1903 • He earned an undergraduate degree and his M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1907 • He founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. (A.S.A.L.H) • He completed his Ph.D from Harvard in 1912.

The African American Hero • He recognized and acted upon the importance of a people having knowledge of its contributions to civilization • He was proven to be one of the most important Black Historians, authors, and social analysts of the 20th century. • Woodson believed that racism was not inherent in human nature.

  7. His Death • Woodson died on April 3, 1950 • He died at the age of 74 • He was buried at the Lincoln Memorial in Suitland- Silver Hill, Maryland.
