Definition of Addicton • Addiction is a chronic disorder caused by a combination of genetic, biological/pharmacological, and social factors. • Addiction is a urge to repeat a behavior in spite of the consequences. • Characteristics- • Cravings for more • Increased physiological tolerance to contact • Withdrawal symptoms to the lack of the source

Affects on the Brain • Nicotine from smoking changes the makeup and function of your brain, so when it stops getting nicotine you start to have strong withdrawal symptoms • Nicotine causes a release of dopamine (the pleasure molecule) into your brain, resulting in feelings of pleasure. Heroin and Crack have the same effects on the Brain. • More nicotine is wanted each time to reach that height of pleasure.

Affects on the Brain (conti.) • As addiction grows the brain connects your daily routines with cravings, to make sure you get a balanced flow. • So certain actions, people, and places we learn to relate with smoking. • That’s why normal everyday activities can trigger the urge to smoke, such as; • Talking on the phone • Drinkingcoffee • Driving • You may also use to feel comfortable in social situations, or when tense or bored.

Some Facts • 95% of cold turkey quitters start smoking again within 6-12 months. • Each year tobacco kills more americans than World War II and the Vietnam War combined. • Tobacco related illnesses kill 440,000 US citizens per year and 5 million deaths per year. • For every one person who dies, 20 more suffer a smoking related illness.

Most people underestimate how difficult it is to resist cravings using willpower. • To quit you need to overcome both your addiction to nicotine and your personal smoking habits • Buying cigarettes add up to close to $1,500 a year.
