About the Partners New York Alliance for Careers in Healthcare (NYACH) • Grant-funded initiative that aims to (1) address the healthcare industry’s rapidly changing labor force needs, and (2) support unemployed and underemployed New Yorkers have access to viable careers in healthcare. Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) • Trade association representing hospitals in New York, as well as the tri-state area. Lehman College School of Continuing and Professional Studies • Part of the City University of New York (CUNY). • Continuing Education offers a vast array of affordable professional certificate programs. Classes are taught by faculty members with extensive experience in their respective fields.

Program Background • The Transition to Practice Certificate program aims to address two key problems in the current nursing field in New York City: • Newlylicensed RNs with limited nursing experience are having difficulty securing their first RN job • Hospitals are in need of nurses with clinical experience, particularly for specific hospital units

Program Structure • The program is 6 months (24 weeks), 3 days a week. • The learning is divided into two components: • Classroom instruction and simulation training at Lehman • - One 6-hour day a week (every Saturday) • Clinical training at a hospital • - Two 12-hour shifts a week • - Supervised by an experienced nurse preceptor

Classroom Training • Developed the curriculum for the classroom portion of the Program based on input from hospital Chief Nursing Officers • The curriculum focuses on: • - critical thinking • - communication • - evidence-based practice • - leadership • - research skills • Provide faculty oversight for the clinical nursing training on-site at the hospital

Classroom Training – Curriculum Learning objectives of the program include: • Analyzing current evidence to determine the best practices for patient care delivery. • Prioritizing and delegating patient care activities according to patient acuity, team members and caseload. • Demonstrating competence in providing nursing care to clients along the trajectory from diagnosis to end-of-life. • Demonstrating safe nursing practice in daily nursing assignments, and during emergency situations. • Incorporating principles of cultural competence when providing care for diverse clientele.

Classroom Training – Curriculum Learning objectives (continued): • Demonstrating effective communication skills during interactions with colleagues, patients, and families, and during emergency situations. • Demonstrating effective use of community resources to meet the health care needs of clients with acute and chronic conditions. • Applying selected principles of care management in providing and evaluating the health care of groups of clients throughout the continuum of care. • Analyzing quality improvement programs, and how they affect the quality of patient care.

Participating Hospitals • Hospitals participating in this program will: • - Interview eligible candidates • - Provide 1:1 nurse preceptors to supervise clinical training • Participating hospitals are: • - Mount Sinai Beth Israel • - Bellevue Hospital Center • - Metropolitan Hospital Center • - New York Presbyterian/The Allen Hospital • - Mount Sinai Beth Israel Brooklyn • - Kings County Hospital Center • *Participants will be matched with a clinical training site based on their specific hospital unit of interest, mutual preference between the participant and hospital, and program need.

Eligibility for Participation In order to be eligible for the program, applicants must: • Be a New York City resident; • Be at least 18 years of age at the time of registration; • Be a fully licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in New York State and have graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an Accredited College or University; • Have passed the NCLEX-RN examination; • Have never been employed as an RN; • If currently employed in a non-RN position, do not earn more than $63,694 annually; • Purchase medical liability insurance as an RN for the maximum coverage available and submit proof of purchase of malpractice insurance; and • Meet all health requirements, and provide supporting documentation, if any, required by the participant’s clinical work site.

Participant Terms and Conditions Participant Performance During the TTP program, all participants must: • Attend all sessions and notify instructors and preceptors of any anticipated missed clinical or classroom time in advance; • Carry him/herself in a professional manner at all times; and • Meet all evaluation criteria as outlined by Lehman College and the participant’s clinical work site. Educational Stipend • Over the course of the TTP program, each participant will be eligible to receive an educational stipend totaling $8,640 to assist with living expenses while enrolled in the program. • Stipend payments will be made on a bimonthly (every two months) basis. • Participants will not be eligible to receive stipend payments if they have withdrawn or been terminated from the TTP program. The ‘Participant Terms and Conditions’ document (found online) will be signed upon acceptance to the program.

FAQs • Where will the classroom training take place? • Lehman’s campus in the Bronx. • How many days a week is the Program? • 3 days a week (Saturdays, and two 12-hour shifts determined with the clinical training site) • When will the interviews with the hospitals occur? • April 9-15 on weekdays (will be scheduling on April 7th and 8th) • Can nurses who are currently enrolled in a BSN program apply? • No, unfortunately this program is only open to those who have a BSN by the time they apply. • I’m currently working as a RN, but am interested in getting experience at one of the program’s partner employers. Can I apply? • No, the program is only open to those who have never been employed as an RN.

FAQs • Is this a nurse refresher program? • No, this is a program designed for newly-licensed RNs who have not had the opportunity yet to work as an RN • I am currently employed, but not as a RN. Can I join the program? • Yes, you can apply for the program if you are actively licensed as a RN, but not working as a RN and making below the eligible income threshold. However, keep in mind that this program will require a significant time commitment and flexible scheduling. • Where can I get medical liability insurance? • This insurance can be purchased through the Nurses Services Organization (http://www.nso.com) and estimated quotes are typically around $100 for one year of coverage. However, you are not limited to NSO and may use another insurance company.

FAQs • Where can I find the application? • The application and information about the program can be found here: http://bit.ly/lehman-him • When are applications due? • All complete applications must be received by 5pm EST on March 28th, 2014. • Do I have to live in New York City to apply? • Yes, all applicants must be current residents of New York City. • Is there a minimum GPA requirement? • No, there is no minimum GPA requirement. However, GPA will be one of many considerations in the selection process.
