  2. What is this? These “letter photos” are pictures taken of everyday objects that look like letters of the alphabet. You choose the letters you want and spell a word. The 4x6 images are framed and assemble into a single unit to be hung on the wall.

  3. Getting Started • Introduce a preview of the lesson a week or two before starting to get students to begin looking for letters. • Give each student a letter. • Discuss basic photography skills/techniques. • Show examples of finished products.

  4. The Project *Students will create multiple images of their assigned letter using photography. *Students will edit each image using either Photoshop or Microsoft Publisher. *Students will choose and print letters to spell a word of their choice and assemble a framed product. *Students will work as a team to provide a marketing plan based on the 4P’s. *Students will divide into small groups to design flyers, order forms, commercials, etc.

  5. The Photo Handout • Students will turn in 3 or more photos of their assigned letter. Letters may be upper or lower case letters. The following subjects are suggested. Structures Tools and Toys The human figure Pre-existing letters Manipulated materials Nature

  6. Editing • Unless you are teaching a photography or digital graphics class, assume that your students know nothing about photo editing. • Provide a step by step handout. • Set examples out for students to use as a comparison when editing photos. • Crop the images so that they fill the space. • Recolor and size the images • Enhance the contrast.

  7. The Marketing Plan • This is a great “real life” application. • Teaches art students the value of planning and marketing for any art career. • Allow students to work out their ideas and problem solve. Don’t do the work for them. • Provide a faux order form with mistakes for students to edit and rework.

  8. The Fundraiser • Use and implement some of the marketing ideas that students have developed. • Use social media, e-mails, local businesses and newspapers to advertise. • Employ parent help. • Send order forms home with students. • Set up work times for assembly. • Create an assembly line for quicker production

  9. Tips • Use VASE students to promote, sell and assemble the artwork. • Pick up supplies at the store to save on delivery fees. • Assign photographs as homework. • Give a basic photography lesson on composition, lighting, focus, and contrast before starting. • Keep it simple the first time. • Take a field trip to a junk store or salvage yard.

  10. What We Did • Advertising: Emails to school employees, friends and family, multiples posts on Facebook and Instagram, created a commercial, made order forms available on-line; sent order forms home with students; made examples • Pricing: $3 per letter + $10 framing fee • Took orders for 2 weeks, then ordered supplies. • Ordered everything on-line from Walmartand Walgreens • Assembled the products after school.
