  2. Program Goal • Primary goal of the CAP Safety Program is to protect both the membership and its assets in performance of their volunteer duties • Mitigate Risks • Control hazards • Prevent Mishaps

Safety Education • Must be an “Educational” experience • Interactive • Ask questions • Take a quiz to review understanding • Examples • Attend a unit meeting • Attend an AOPA seminar • Take on-line course through AOPA/Air Safety • Attend an FAA Wings seminar • Attend a work safety briefing • Take an on-line course at NHQ

  4. Safety Currency • Be current to participate in any CAP activity • Member is responsible to ensure they are Current • Every event must have an Activity Safety Officer • NYW Safety Officer • NYW Cadet Safety Officer • ORM briefing must be given before participation in the event can begin

  5. Conference Safety • Emergency exits • 2 primary exits • Meet at the on the grass by the Fort • Attendance of members • Senior members by Lt Col Carello and Lt Col Model • Cadet members by Lt Col Stevens and C/Lt Col Hyatt • Look to assist fellow members • Afternoon Sessions • Look for the exits in rooms

Stairs in conference center • Access lower levels out side with ramp • When traveling between the hotel and conference center • Fort is open; look out for vehicle traffic • Look where walking; uneven surface • When walking around town • Use common sense • Dancing after the Banquet • Be careful • Pool party • Proper Supervision

Mishaps in NYW 2011 • Continued issues with the tire pressure • Pilots review presentation • New form in aircraft to record pressure • Every 7 Days • Pressure must be within 10% recommendation of manufacture • Weight and Balance • Cessna 182 • Take Off weight verses Landing weight • As high as 150 pounds • Pay attention to W&B • Van pushed off the road by wind • ORM before vehicle departs

Mishaps in 2010 • 2 Flat tires/Overweight • Window damaged (not closed) in C182 • Use of Check list • Canopy damaged (turtle portion not closed) • Ground personnel and pilot verify before tow • Gear up landing • Check Lists for all phases of flight • Finger broken by car window • Look before closing

Cadet Mishaps in 2010 • Dehydration • Ensure all members are drinking 2-3 quarts per day • Not eating enough • Keep healthy snacks on hand (granola bars, sandwiches, etc) • Cadets running into each other • Be more aware of surroundings • Shuttle run injuries • Ensure that running surfaces are not too slippery and cadets know how to perform the activity safely

  10. Mishaps in NYW 2011 • Cut finger on wood log • Use gloves when handling foreign objects • Sprained ankle during bivouac • Be more aware of surroundings and identify potentially dangerous areas, do not allow members to walk in areas with too many safety risks

Closing thoughts on Safety • In 1 minute, what can be done? • Review a room and look for hazards • Look at activity area and find any potential risks • Check tire pressure • Look at the aircraft (before getting in) • Look at the vehicle before it moves • Spend 1 minute and prevent a mishap • Live the CAP motto: Always Vigilant
