  1. Paper Critique Towards a Better Understanding of Context and Context-Awareness Anind K. Dey and Gregory D. Abowd Robert Whitaker

  2. Goals • Perform a survey of existing context based systems • Develop definition of Context • Apply definition to application development • Develop definition of Context-Aware Computing • Describe requirements of architecture to apply definitions for

  3. Is this Paper Good??

  4. Technically Sound • Did not actually build anything just presented ideas • Definitions could be applied to existing systems • Nothing ground breaking in their ideas so most likely possible

  5. Original Contribution • Definitions brought together ideas of many researchers, from this aspect there was original contribution • Took other people’s ideas and reworded them as their own

  6. Presentation and Organisation

  7. Improvements • Use their Context Widget’s Framework to evaluate if the definitions could also be applied to context application development • Show results of their evaluation with existing systems

  8. References • 28 references • Poor use of references in some areas • Overuse of references in sections • Website to see more information on architecture out of date • Overall: good, use could have been improved in parts of the paper

  9. Paper’s Significance • 44 Citations • Most were papers focused on developed context-aware applications • A large number were 2004 based • Lot of self citations

  10. Considerations in Evaluation • Workshop Paper • Work was part of PHD Thesis, which has since finished • There was a tool kit developed in a previous paper for developing context aware systems

  11. Summary Overall Rating: Reasonably Good
