The Pixel

Every digital image consists of a fundamental small-scale descriptor: THE PIXEL. Just as pointillist artwork uses a series of paint blotches, millions of pixels can also combine to create a detailed and seemingly continuous image. The Pixel. A megapixel is made up of 1 million pixels.

  1. Every digital image consists of a fundamental small-scale descriptor: THE PIXEL. Just as pointillist artwork uses a series of paint blotches, millions of pixels can also combine to create a detailed and seemingly continuous image. The Pixel

  2. A megapixel is made up of 1 million pixels

  3. PPI for web: 72, PPI for print: 300

  4. *Tiff files are typically 3 times the size of RAW files. Jpegs are the smallest, but most lossy image format.

  5. JPEG • Goes through the Bayer interpolation, is modified by in camera set parameters such as white balance, saturation, sharpness, contrast etc, is subject to JPEG compression and then stored. • Advantages: Smaller file size, can be directly read by many programs. • Disadvantages: There is a quality loss, the amount of loss depending on how much compression is used. More compression = smaller, lower quality file. • Can only store images in at 8 bits per channel • Can not save images in layers. • *Suitable for images on the web, emailing photos, to fit the maximum number of images on a camera's memory card.

  6. RAW A camera raw image file contains minimally processed data from the image sensor of a digital camera. Raw files are so named because they are not yet processed and therefore are not ready to be printed or edited with an editing program. Advantages:You can change many of the shooting parameters AFTER exposure. Files can be edited and saved in different ways and different formats without any loss or modification of the original RAW file, thus changes can always be “undone”. The RAW file remains intact, acting as your “digital negative”. Disadvantages: Photoshop/Bridge with Camera RAW plug-in is required to read and convert RAW files. RAW files require extra processing steps before they can be printed or shared online, through email, etc. RAW files are larger than Jpegs and therefore, fewer will fit onto a camera's memory card.

  7. PSD A Photoshop Document is Photoshop's native image file format.A PSD file stores an image with support for most imaging options available in Photoshop. Advantages: Stores layers with masks, color spaces, ICC profiles, etc with predictable functionality. Disadvantages: File format can only be read by Photoshop.

  8. TIFF TIFF (originally standing for Tagged Image File Format) is a file format for storing images, popular among graphic artists, the publishing industry, and both amateur and professional photographers in general. Advantages: The TIFF format is widely supported by image-manipulation applications. TIFFs can store images in layers Can be compressed or uncompressed, but the compression scheme is lossless, meaning that although the file gets a little smaller, no information is lost. Disadvantages: TIFFs (along with PSD files) are the largest files, making saving, opening, and working with files slower.
