  1. ONLINE Research:choose your sources carefully How to find reliable information online

  2. Searching the Internet • If you want to search the Internet, then you have to use a search engine, type in your search as accurately as possible, and browse through the results to find the one you want.

  3. Searching the Internet • The most common search engines are Google, Yahoo and Bing

  4. Searching the Internet • Choose a few of the most specific or relevant keywords or phrases to describe your topic.

  5. Search Tips • Place a minus sign (-) prior to each word to “omit a word,” such as recipe-meat for a vegetarian meal. • While searching, bookmark any other sites of interest.

  6. Search Tips • Utilize quotation marks, to find an exact match such as "flower arrangement.” Otherwise you could end up with this result: • An arrangement to purchase a flower vase from the 19th century…

  7. Search Tips • Common words are usually overlooked during a Google search, so if a common word like "how" or "the" is essential to your search, put a "+" in front of it. • Enter a short question, such as "what time is it?"

  8. Search Tips Search by specific type of file by writing filetype:<name_of_type><subject> for example : "filetype:jpg Destiny’s Child” You will get all jpg image files on Destiny’s Child in the results.

  9. Search Tips • Generally, capitalization and punctuation are not needed. • Search engines usually disregard minor words such as "the, and, to, etc."

  10. Search Tips • If a set of words belongs together in a phrase, you should put“quotes” around those words or dashes-in-between-them. This is great for when you know a few lyrics to a song and want to search them to find the song's name.

  11. Quick Search • To see the weather in your location search Weather and add a city name or zip code after weather

  12. Quick Search • Dictionary. Put [define] in front of any word to see its definition.

  13. Quick Search • Calculations. Enter a math equation like [3*9123], or solve complex graphing equations. • Quick facts. Search for the name of a celebrity, location, movie, or song to find important information.

  14. Safe Search • With SafeSearch, you can help prevent adult content from appearing in your search results. No filter is 100 percent accurate, but SafeSearch should help you avoid most of this type of material.

  15. Safe Search • Turn on SafeSearch by clicking the gear icon on the search page. Select Search Settings

  16. Safe Search • Check the box beside "Filter explicit results.”
