  2. Battle of Great Bridge Celebration 2012 18th Annual Battle of Great Bridge Reenactment Toys for Tots Poker Run The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation organized a Motorcycle Poker Run December 9, 2012, to benefit the Hampton Roads Toys for Tots. Historic Battlefield Park was one of their stops along the Run that started in Virginia Beach and ended in Portsmouth. The event was a huge success, and we were happy to be a part of it. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation raised and gathered over $6,000 in toys from this event, which were distributed to over 20,000 children and 8,000 families in the Hampton Roads area. The 18th Annual Battle of Great Bridge Reenactment was held December 1 and 2, 2012, at the old fire station, 116 Callison Drive in Chesapeake. Docent Program The weekend festivities began with the DAR and SAR Battle of Great Bridge Celebration 2012 at Battlefield Park. Members of the SAR traveled far and wide and generously presented the Foundation with a $10,000 check during this memorable event. Their presence truly made the day special and highlighted the historical significance of the Battle of Great Bridge and our cause. Pictured to the right is Charles Murla as he entertained guests of the Celebration with his colonial music. A special thanks to our Mayor Alan Krasnoff for presenting both the DAR and SAR with a proclamation and to our City of Chesapeake Parks and Recreation department that makes this event possible. The 18th Annual Battle of Great Bridge Reenactment itself was spectacular as usual. There were military encampments, period sutlers, colonial crafts and music, children’s activities, and a colonial fashion show. The Foundation’s exciting Docent Program is expanding and currently meets three to four times a year focusing on continued education. February’s special speaker, Mr. Norman Fuss, portrays a British engineer in the King's Army in America. He is very knowledgeable in the British perspective of the battle; although, Norman is also a Reenactor for the 7th Virginia Regiment. Barbie, his wife, will also be joining the meeting to speak of the female perspective of colonial lifestyle. If you are interested in joining our Docent Program or scheduling your own free VIP Tour led by one of our knowledgeable docents, please email info@gbbattlefield.org or call the office at 757.482.4480. Mike and Allen’s Cannon Adventure Pictured below is Mike Johnson and Allen Mordica, our cannon experts, giving demonstrations throughout the Battle of Great Bridge Reenactment weekend. Look for them at Battlefield Park during this year’s 4th Annual Waterways Heritage Festival and 19th Annual Battle of Great Bridge Reenactment weekends. Allen and Mike have been busy creating a replica of a cannon used in the Battle of Great Bridge to be on display in our Battlefield Park. If that wasn’t exciting enough, they videotaped their cannon-making adventure. To view their video, please visit us on Facebook or online at www.gbbattlefield.org Proudly Advancing to Achievement Level The Elizabeth River Project hosted its Annual Recognition Luncheon at which they presented awards to businesses and organizations that have documented significant results in wildlife habitat enhancement and/or pollution prevention. The Foundation advanced this year from Commitment Level to Achievement Level; recognized specifically for adding almost 5,000 native trees and shrubs to Battlefield Park, including 900 square feet of permeable paving that allows rain to soak in at the parking lot rather than causing runoff, using recycled material for benches and picnic tables, and more. We thank the Elizabeth River Project and are proud to be a River Star and part of such a worthwhile project. City of Chesapeake’s 50th Anniversary The City of Chesapeake celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. The Foundation is honored to be included in 2 of the 50th Anniversary Signature Events. The 4th Annual Waterways Heritage Festival (October 12 & 13, 2013) and the 19th Annual Battle of Great Bridge Reenactment (December 7 & 8, 2013) have both been selected as one of the “50 Events Celebrating 50 Years!” Pictured to the left is the City of Chesapeake’s 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coin. There were only two coins designed, one is dedicated to the Battle of Great Bridge and on the back is as follows: In this vicinity in 1775, was the southern end of a causeway, with bridges, by which the swamp and stream were crossed. William Woodford’s Virginia Riflemen defended the passage. When Lord Dunmore’s British Regulars attempted to cross the swamp on December 9, 1775 they were cut to pieces by the fire of the Riflemen. This defeat forced Dunmore to evacuate Norfolk.
