  2. Purpose The purpose of the Geography assignment is for you to demonstrate that you can research a Geographical topic or issue, gathering information from EITHERprimary sources (where you gather or your own data) OR secondary sources (where you look at data or information produced by other people). The most important part is of this process is how well you ANALYSE (discuss what you have found out) from the information you have gathered.
  3. What’s it worth? The assignment is worth 30 marks out a total 90. It is therefore 33% of your final mark. You will have 1 hour and 30 minutes to write up your assignment under exam conditions. You must produce two sides of A4 with processed information that you will take into assignment. You will use this processed information to write up the assignment.
  4. What type of processed information can I use? You must not copy or paraphrase large sections from your processed information Note: Anything you take from a secondary source must be referenced.
  5. How to write the assignment Please refer to the hand-out ‘Instructions for Candidates’ This highlights the mark allocations of different parts of the assignment and goes into detail about what to include in each section. Your assignment should be structured in the following way.
  6. TITLE: What is the topic/issue you are studying AIM: What are you trying to find out? This could be in the form of a question. METHOD: How did you carry out your research? How useful and reliable were the methods of research or sources of information that you used? BACKGROUND: what have you learnt about the topic or issue? Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the topic/issue. ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION: what have you found out from your research? CONCLUSION: pull everything you have learnt together. What are your final thoughts?
  7. Possible topics/research questions An environmental quality survey of two housing developments in the school catchment area A comparison of two new housing developments in the school catchment area? Aging population in Scotland. How big a problem is it? Social, Economic and environmental impacts of the closure of Cockenzie power station What will the social, environmental and economic impacts of the world cup have onshanty towns in Rio? What have the impacts of the smoking ban had on Scotland’s health?
