2. Property of moxa • Artemisia Vulgaris -is a species of compositae, the best one called “Qizhou”moxa for highest quality.蕲州艾 It’s tall, thick leaves, strong smell, so better result. • It is bitter, acrid, warm, of pure yang nature, having the ability to restore the primary qi from collapse.

3. Indications of moxa • open the 12 meridian to regulate Qi & blood, • expel cold & dampness, • warm the uterus, • stop bleeding, • warm the spleen & stomach to remove the stagnation, regulate menstruation and • ease the fetus…. • when burned, it penetrates all the meridians, eliminating hundreds of disease.

7. Different kinds of moxa • Moxa wool • Moxa cones: small size: like grain of wheat, medium size: like half of a date core, big size: size of upper part of thumb • Moxa sticks: big size- 20cm long,1.5cm in diameter. Small size: different kind of small moxa sticks. exp:smokeless moxa

9. Direct moxa • Scarring moxibustion • Non-scarring moxibustion

10. Scarring moxibustion • Apply some onion or garlic juice on skin, leave the cone on the skin until it is completely burned out, repeat this procedure for 5- 10 units, so the skin get burned, blister,festering, scar after healing.

11. Take care of the local skin • Avoid skin infection • Wash the local area : cong bai,bo he warm tea to wash the local area to help heal • After the scar: wash with young peach tree skin to prevent problem • Pain after direct moxa: wash with huang lian tea

12. Non-scarring moxibustion • Remove the cone when patient feel hot or discomfort, then place another cone, the skin doesn’t get burned, so there is no scar on the skin.

13. Functions of direct moxibustion • Boost the immune system, increase the self defense ability, so it is good for chronic, deficient and cold nature conditions. example: chronic asthma, chronic diarrhea, indigestion, etc.

Functions of indirect moxibustion • With ginger: cold deficient problems,exa : acute diarrhea, abdominal pain, joint pain. • With garlic: Scrofula, TB, early stage of skin ulcer with boil, poisonous insect bite. • With salt: chronic abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, pain around belly. hernia pain, prolonged dysentery. Also can restore yang from collapse, excessive sweating, cold limb, undetectable pulse. • With monkshood cake (fuzi) : treat yin-cold, deficient syndromes, impotence, ejaculation praecox.

16. Functions of indirect moxibustion • White hu jiao :add flour together to make a cake, put ding xiang,rou gui and/or she xiang and moxa cone on it. Good for wind damp bi pain or local numbness. • Yellow dirt cake: boil on back, localized eczema

17. Moxa stick • Mild-warm moxibustion: stationary, moving around. • Sparrow- pecking moxibustion • Function: warm, expel cold. It is easy to control heat and time.

18. Warming needle moxibustion • Put a cone on the top of needle handle to penetrate the warm sensation into the body. • Function: both needle and moxibustion functions. It can promote the free flow of Qi and blood, it is good for wind cold damp bi pain.

31. The Great Monad herbal stick and Thunder-Fire herbal stick • Add some herbs powder to the moxa, mix together, then make into moxa stick. Because there are some herbs in, so their functions for cold, wind, damp bi pain, numbness and muscle strain, etc are stronger.

Great Monad herbal stick • 4 liang of moxa wool a bit of she xiang • 4 qian of ren shen 8 qian of san qi • 2 qian of goat’s blood 2 liang of gan cao • 1 liang of qian nian jian 4 liang of fang feng • 1 liang of zuan di feng 1 liang of cang zhu • 1 liang of rou gui 8 qian of chuan shan jia • 1 liang of chuan jiao 1 liang of xiao hui xiang • 1 liang of ru xiang 1 liang of muo yao

33. Great monad herbal stick • Grind the above herbs to powder, get 7 to 8 qian, put on the mulberry paper,glue with egg white, roll to a stick, put in a no direct sunlight room to dry.

34. Thunder fire heral stick • 2 liang of moxa wool • 3 qian of chen xiang, mu xiang, ru xiang, yin chen, qiang huo, gan jiang,chuan shan jie, • A bit she xiang • Use mulbarry paper to roll, egg white as glue, put in a no direct sunlight place to slowly dry. • It is good for all kinds of pains and cold damp bi pain patients who are scare of needles.

36. Crude herb moxibustion • They don’t use moxa wool and fire, but other kinds of spicy herbs, like Bai Jie Zi, Garlic, Ban Mao, etc. Put them on the point to irritate skin, make local area red, and blister occurs, like what happens after moxibustion. So we call it crude herb moxibustion. It can treat some different kinds of problems.

37. Crude herb moxibustion • Bai Jie Zi on back shu for asthma, also can treat yin ulcer, scrofula. • Garlic on Kid1 for coughing blood, nose bleeds. On Li4 for tonsillitis. On Lu10 for throat pain. • Ban Mao with ginger on local for skin problem. • Han lian cao local for malaria. • Yellow wax on joints for sore and painful joint. • Deng xin cao with oil to touch the baby’s ear for infantile convulsion, faint, etc.

38. The process and volume for moxibustion • Normally from yang part to yin part, from upper part of the body to lower part, from back to front, head and body first, then extremities.This is changeable according to the pathological conditions. • Volume:generally 3-7 moxa cones or 10- 15 minutes each point. Depends on the size of the moxa cone. • Tonifying and sedating according to the fire burned out naturally or not.

39. Contraindication of moxibustion • Excess syndromes, yin xu heat syndromes are not allowed to use moxibustion. • Be cautious to use scarring moxibustion. It can not be applied to face, head or near large blood vessels and jionts. For example, BL1,ST9 ( jng ming, renying ). • Pregnant woman’s abdomen, lumber-sacrum area are not allowed to moxibustion.

40. Accident management • After moxa, can apply some ointment for burn. like Jing Wan Hong. if blister occurs, small one , leave it there, big one, drain it. if there is pus,put gauze on it to avoid infection. • Be careful during the procedure, not burn on patient, patient’s hair and clothes. • Put unfinished moxa in a safe container to avoid fire.

41. Moxa examples • Moxa UB17,19 --also called moxa four flowers. Also called riding a bamboo horse moxa. • --good for all kinds of deficiency. • Moxa UB43 --good for yang xu,wind and cold issues, leaking of essence,etc. Can combine with Ren 6,4. • Moxa UB23 --tonify kidney • Moxa DU1 --hemorrhoids. Herbal wash first. • Moxa 2 spots under the belly -- • Moxa Liv1 --for hernia and cold pain on the low abdomen.
