  1. Education and Outreach (With emphasis on E/PO GMs and GBOs) Engineering Peer ReviewOct. 17, 2003Nahide CraigLaura Peticolas E/PO-1

  2. Coordination and Dissemination Formal Informal E/PO Overview Science Center and ASTC (Association of Science & Technology Centers) Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS) GEMS Teacher Training Update Northern Lights Planetarium Show: Distributed > 100 sites UCB/SSL, UCLA, IMAGE, FAST and 10 NASA Space Grant Consortia E/PO site and their affiliates (> 113 sites) SACNAS Partnership (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans) National Teacher Professional Workshops Cornerstone Evaluation Associates Designs THEMIS-E/PO evaluation effort Provides both formative and summative evaluation E/PO-2

  3. Coordination and Dissemination Formal Informal E/PO Overview E/PO with a close Science and Engineering Connection 10 Northern Latitude States - Space Science Consortia Ground Based Magnetometer School Sites Astronomy Café- Formal Education Partner UCB SEGway Program Develops SEC Theme educational materials Oversees the GEONS Project Distributes through established museum partners Chicano and Native-American Teachers - Tribal Colleges for Magnetometer Sites E/PO-3

  4. Coordination and Dissemination Formal Informal Formal Education ProgramsGeomagnetic Event Observation Network by Students (GEONS) UNIQUE opportunity for THEMIS to entice students about NASA SEC The network of the 10 teachers, students, at E/PO magnetometer sites together with other students who participate using the web and monitoring the magnetic activity is called the Geomagnetic Event Observation Network by Students (GEONS). Schools will be selected by state-wide competition and will have the following selection criteria: • Commitment of schools – acceptance of the program by the administration • Longitudinal spread in each 10 states provide wide geographic coverage • Local infrastructure- Electric Power, Internet Connection, • Potential for reaching large community of students/teachers • Site’s potential for discoveries – away from highways, large trucks, rural sites UCLA provides technical users manuals along with GMAG unit • Will install 5 Magnetometers in Summer ’04 and 5 in Summer ’05 • Will provide ground data processing, data access, and archiving procedures E/PO-4

  5. Coordination and Dissemination Formal Informal Formal Education ProgramsGeomagnetic Event Observation Network by Students (GEONS) • Astronomy Café • rewrites the users manual for school usage • develops guides/materials aligned with NSES • leverages IMAGE’s MagNet with existing school networks • participates in the GEONS teacher workshops • Student Observation Network (S.O.N.) of NASA would like to include our program. • The S.O.N program guides students through tracking solar storms from start to finish. • They need GM and GBO data!! • Additional GBOs to E/PO sites ( cont..) E/PO-5

  6. Alaska GBO-E/PO sites • We have four GBO sites in Alaska containing an all-sky camera, a magnetometer, and a computer. • We plan to have teachers as custodians for the red-star locations (Kiana, McGrath, and Gakona). • The Fort Yukon custodian is the person who helps the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. Kiana Fort Yukon 65 mlat McGrath 60 mlat Gakona E/PO-6

  7. AK Teacher involvement • Teachers will act as custodians for three out of four of the AK GBO sites • Part of the contract of these teachers will include bringing them down to take part in our E/PO GEONS professional development workshops • AK teachers will be part of both the GBO science team and the E/PO GEONS team. E/PO-7

  8. AK GBO-E/PO logistics • In Kiana, we have already found a teacher who will act as a custodian to a GBO-E/PO site: Glenn Miller. • All four sites have power for an electrical connection and they all have phone access. • In Gakona and McGrath, we are still checking to see if there are existing structures, custodians (teachers), and internet links. E/PO-8

  9. Coordination and Dissemination Formal Informal The organizational structure of the E/PO effort UCLA GBO installation, User Manual E/PO-9

  10. Coordination and Dissemination Formal Informal Summary and Conclusion • THEMIS E/PO • Builds on successful efforts of reliable E/PO Heritage • Secures strong, capable and experienced partnerships • Uses awesome ‘aurora’ data • Reaches underserved communities with technology tools • Has well-evaluated program • AND • Promises to excite and inspire both educators and broad • audiences, motivates the next generation of scientists • and engineers.
