  3. The Problem of Accidental Injury • Leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 14. • More deaths than from cancer, heart disease and SIDS. • One million children under the age of 15 worldwide die from accidents each year.

The Economic Impact of Accidental Injuries • They are the leading cause of medical spending for U.S. children ages 5 to 14. • One of every five U.S. children will need medical attention for an accidental injury this year. • For every U.S. child injured, the average cost is more than $12,700. That includes medical costs, future earnings lost and lost quality of life. Each year, injuries incur a total lifetime cost of $303.4 billion.

  7. The Solution • Safe Kids Worldwide is a grassroots organization with 16 member countries. Within these countries, there are more than 400 state and local coalitions. • Safe Kids Washoe County formed as a local coalition in 2000 with REMSA as the lead agency.

  8. Our Mission Safe Kids Worldwide leads coalitions of community partners to prevent accidental death and injury to children ages 14 and under. We empower families and communities to: • Educate adults and children • Create safe environments • Conduct research and evaluation • Advocate for effective laws

  11. Coalitions Coalition members are policemen, firefighters, MEDICS, doctors, nurses, teachers, business owners, MEDICS, lawmakers, community volunteers, retirees and MEDICS like YOU!

  13. Leading Injury Risks to Children in the U.S. • Traffic crashes (motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, bicyclists and other wheeled sports) • Drowning • Falls • Fires and burns • Choking, suffocation and strangulation

  14. Safe Kids Programs Our programs reach families directly with injury prevention messages. They are research-based and include education, advocacy and distribution of safety devices. Every dollar raised in our community for Safe Kids stays in Washoe County to save our children’s lives.

Safe Kids Week Sponsored by • Public education program combining coalition activities, public awareness efforts and retail promotions to teach families about injury prevention • Observed annually in the United States since 1993 • Also takes place in Brazil, Canada, China and the Philippines • Results: Millions of families reached

  17. Safe Kids Week 2007 • 41% of accidental injuries to children occur between May and August • Focus ~ Drowning, Biking/Wheeled Sports, Falls, Pedestrian Injuries and Motor Vehicle Crashes.

  18. Safe Kids Walk This Way Sponsored by • Conducts high-visibility school-based events in Brazil, Canada, China, Korea, the Philippines and the United States • Forms and sustains year-round task forces to improve walking environments • Results: 1,180 events from 2000 to 2004

Local Walk This Way Events in 2007 • Worked with SIX elementary schools • 100 Volunteers manned intersections teaching kids safety rules including Miss Nevada • Presented safety skits at 3 schools using students to demonstrate issues specific to each school • Drawing/coloring contests at 4 schools • On-going safety committees

Safe Kids Buckle Up Sponsored by • Leading U.S. program educating families about the importance of properly restraining kids on every ride • 119 Mobile Car Seat Check Up Vans bring child passenger safety resources to families • 75 Child Safety Seat Inspection Stations have permanent locations with regular hours • Results: More than 17,000 events, with 659,000 seats checked

  21. Child Passenger Safety Week 2007 • 7 car seat check events in 6 days • 162 cars • 235 seats • 42 volunteers • $9,600 worth of donated radio sponsorship!

Safe Kids Ready to Roll Sponsored by • Promotes increased helmet use and teaches safety for all wheeled sports • Conduct community-based bike rodeos that teach kidssafe riding skills and the importance of wearing helmets • Results: Since April 2004, 546 events with more than 89,000 children participating

Not Even For A Minute Campaign • Public awareness campaign about the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles – backovers, temperature, power accessory and trunk entrapment, runaway vehicles • Identified a trend locally – three backover deaths in 6 months • Approached by an inspired partner at Rotary • Distribution points where caregivers are likely to leave kids – daycares, schools, banks, 7-11, Scolari’s, drycleaners

  24. NEFAM Goes BIG! • Expanded statewide through the support of the Nevada State Firefighters’ Association • 12 bilingual billboards in Washoe County in 2007

  25. Safe Kids Worldwide –Our Goals for 2015 • Reduce childhood deaths from accidentalinjury 25 percent in member countries. • Expand the reach of Safe Kids by establishing six regional offices around the globe and growing to 75 member countries.

Safe Kids Washoe County –Our Strategic Plan through 2008 Our goals include: • In the next 18 months, increase usage of Child Safety Seats from 57% to 62% • Measure usage by ‘Tweens (seatbelts ages 8-15) • Not Even For A Minute Project Continuation during 2007- July 2008 • Build a Pedestrian Program in a Box within 12 months • Continue with Walk This Way annually and expand to 5 schools in 2007/08. • Double our financial support and generate $20,000 annually for Safe Kids Washoe County

We Are Making a Difference! • Since 1987, fatal accidental injury in children has decreased nationwide by 43%. • In 2004 in Nevada , we saw an 18% increase statewide of booster seat usage • In Washoe County in 2000, there were seven children killed in motor vehicle crashes. In 2005 – there was only one.

How You Can Help We Need YOU!! • Donations and fundraising will help implement the programs we envisioned. • Coalition members are always needed for committees, events, fundraising and planning. • Make the difference in the life of a child – commit today to prevent accidental injuries and death in our community.
