You just don’t write it down. • No one should judge, of course…but we get an idea of what a person is like by: • What they look like • What they say • Their actions • What you know about their past • What groups/people they are affiliated with

  3. Here’s your FREE PASS – Go Ahead and Judge! • A Character Analysis paper involves taking a character from a novel and making a judgment about the character’s personality • When you write a character analysis paper it is GOOD to judge • All you have to do is support your judgments with proof! • You get to be a psychologist • You get to be a profiler

  4. Types of Judgments • Does the character’s name have meaning? What is it? • What is the character’s appearance? What judgment can you make by what they look like? • What does the character’s actions say about him or her? • What do the character’s choices indicate?

  5. More Judgments • What does the character say? • Does the character’s actions match the character’s words? • How does the character say it? • What attitude does the character display? • How are other characters reacting? • What are the characters thoughts/feelings? • Ca you tell based on what he/she says?

  6. And more…. • How do past events affect the character? • Does the character share the information about his past events himself or do other’s share it? • What impact do the events have on the character’s actions? • What do other characters say about the character? • Are the other character’s judgments reliable or not?

  7. Drawing Conclusions • Your JOB is to make multiple conclusions about your character • BE CAREFUL! Very rarely is a character ALL BAD! • Make sure you explore all avenues of your character’s personality • Back your ideas up! • Quotes • Describe actions – Straight from the text

  8. Choose your character You can choose anyone but Lennie – Sorry folks! Think about what you find interesting about each of the characters. Who can you write the most about? Who do you think you can relate to the best? Or who do you understand the best?
