  1. Server Foundation Overview:SE Interlock 2006Mark Lohmeyer1/25/06

  2. Agenda • Data Center Evolution • Our Strategy • Current Capabilities & Future Direction

  3. The Data Center Environment is Changing • Server footprint is growing • Scale out Linux/Windows • Scale up + partitioning • Application complexity is increasing • Multi-tiered applications  SOA • More business critical applications • Server virtualization is emerging • Across all server platforms • Moving into production Environment is more distributed Environment is more complex Environment is more dynamic

  4. A Real Customer Example: SYMC IT

  5. This Presents a New Set of Challenges • Controlling admin / server costs • Increasing server utilization • Accelerating app roll-outs / updates • Achieving internal & external compliance • Delivering data center wide availability Current Model # Servers / Apps Cost to procure Cost to manage Desired Model # Servers / Apps Cost to procure Cost to manage

  6. Our Strategy for Server Foundation • Vision: Deliver an integrated suite that is THE solution that system admins rely on to manage EVERY server in the data center: • Enhance visibility & control • Automate labor-intensive tasks & reduce errors • Ensure end-to-end application availability • Drive down costs (people & hardware) • Leverage strong position of VCS • XX% revenue growth in 2005 (!) • Best-in-class solution for HA/DR • Investment in focused areas (DR, etc.) to fuel growth • Significantly extend Provisioning Manager (OpForce) capabilities • Best-in-class provisioning, success in specific use-cases; YY% growth • Given us a good understanding of broader customer problems

  7. Server Foundation Capabilities • Configuration management  Key customer decision driver today • Environment discovery; CMDB population, change tracking, and execution • Patch management  Customer decision driver today • Windows, Linux and Unix OS and Application patches • Server provisioning  Differentiator, but not a driver • Bare metal OS builds; deploy & configure apps (Provisioning Manager) • Network integration  Differentiator, but not a driver • Remote calls to switches, VLAN’s (Provisioning Manager) • Application control & optimization  Future differentiator • Control start/stop/move of apps, optimize server utilization (VAD focus now) • Application availability  Large business now, oppty to leap-frog • Mission critical apps today, entire DC in future (VCS today, VAD future) Key: Symantec offering today, Gap in Symantec offering today

  8. Diving in to Configuration Management Tools that allow IT managers to discover, track, make changes to, and audit/report on IT components • Environment Discovery & Dependency Mapping • All open system OS’es, applications, & dependencies • Logical grouping of multi-tiered app’s into “business applications” • Configuration Collection • Find, parse, and store configuration data at granular level • Large libraries of application templates to automate collection • Change Tracking and Reporting • Find and track changes to configurations • Report for auditing purposes • Change Execution • Change specific granular configurations (vs. package delivery) • Ability to rollback to previous state

  9. Bringing It All Together Simplify system deployment, patch and upgrade. Get real time control over your application resources today & deliver availability as part of the architecture Maximize availability of mission critical applications and databases Roadmap: Build full server configuration management solution

  10. Summary • We think the future potential for Server Foundation is great • Focused on solving a whole new set of customer problems • Extends our reach to every server in the data center • Delivering an integrated suite is key to winning • We’ve got differentiated technology now, and filling remaining gaps • VCS is the best solution for HA/DR and the growth proves it • VPM is the best solution for provisioning and the growth proves it • VAD is a totally new way to deliver app control, optimization, & availability • Configuration management & patch management are gaps, but not for long • We’re going to be in a very hot market • Growing at 70%+ per year • Should be relevant to almost every customer
