1. Produce and Publish Training Videos on the Web Ken Theriot Sep 9th 2014

 2. Why Video?

 3. Text Version of Lean Training Concept “Let's use an example to compare a traditional batch-and-queue process to a single-piece flow process. Our example has three processing “stations” that each transform a piece of work-in-process until it is complete. Management has determined that it is most efficient to move/process parts in batches of 10. To complete a single batch of 10, it takes 30 seconds. Now let’s do the same process using single-piece flow. After a single piece of WIP is processed at station one, it is moved to station 2, who begin process two immediately, after which it is moved to station 3, where it is completed. This method is repeated for each item. When done this way, it takes 12 seconds to process 10 pieces, a savings of 18 seconds, a 60% reduction in total production time.”

 7. Text can be made better with pictures… Pictures can be made better with videos

 8. Other Benefits of Video • Build better relationship with customers • Can see faces and personalities • Priority in search engines • People engage more with videos

 9. Examples Lynda.com – training videos Home Brew Audio

 10. So How Do We Do It?

 11. Create and Publish Video

 12. How do You Create Videos?

 13. Types of Videos • The talking head - just a person talking to you • “Person demonstrating how to do something” video. • PowerPoint slide show video - is pretty much just … a PowerPoint slide show but in a video • usually with someone narrating the voice-over. • Screen cast videos like you saw on Lynda and on Home Brew Audio

 14. Types of Videos 5. Animations with voiceovers  - Sketch videos (ASAP Science video) - Explainer animations -- GoAnimate (goanimate.com) 6. Some hybrid of the above – I recommend this!

 15. Creating The Videos • Capture the video • The Talking Head and the “Person demonstrating how to do something” video • actual device or video camera • Slide Show - Don’t even need a camera! • Just use screen capture software like Camtasia Studio, Screen Flow or the free Jing • Screen casting videos - same as above

 16. Creating The Videos • Produce the video • Actually creating a product • Title text • Combining multiple bits of video on a timeline using video software (we’ll talk) • Editing out bad takes, shots, etc. • Adding Audio • Put it all together as one file • “Render” video file (can take a long time!) • mp4! (maybe mov)

 17. Creating The Videos • Software • iMovie • Mac only. It’s pretty decent • Learning curve • Vegas • Windows only. My preferred program • Camtasia • Mac or Windows: For screen cast videos • Complete production capabilities

 18. How do You Publish Videos?

 19. Publishing Your Video You need 2 things: Host A place to put your video on the web Player A way for people to watch it

 20. Publishing Your Video • Hosting • DIY • Just upload the video to your domain (FTP usually) • 3rd Party hosting - simply storage and streaming • Amazon S3 for example • Easy and Free • YouTube • Vimeo • All-in-one Online video services - Paid • Brightcove • Sprout • Wistia

 21. Publishing Your Video • Players • Don’t just put a link! • With YouTube, you don’t need a player • Embed code! Just copy and paste • Wordpress – Player is built in • Stand-alone players • FlowPlayer • JW Player

 22. Ways To Publish Your Video Quick and Easy - YouTube • Upload a video to YouTube • Copy it’s embed code • Paste it on your site However… • Can’t put vids behind a paywall • They’re not secure • You don’t own the hosting

 23. Ways To Publish Your Video Still Good Uses For YouTube • Teaser videos to draw traffic to your own site • Entertaining videos (YouTube is primarily for entertainment!)

 24. Ways To Publish Your Video DIY • Upload a video to your own domain • Place a 3rd party player on a page to stream that video • Or just type video’s url into Wordpress (shortcode) • Drawback: Might take up too much space with your web host • Upload video to Amazon S3 • Place a 3rd party player on a page to stream that video • Et Voila!

 25. Audio Quality Bad Audio Can Ruin Good Video!
