  2. Introduction • If the Bible comes from God, what about the other books that claim inspiration? • Do the other religious books come from God? • There are many books that claim to come from God or some kind of higher power. • We’ll look at only a few (from least well known to most well known). • And then we’ll look at whether God speaks through all of them or just the Bible. Bible From God?

  3. The Qu’ran • The Qu’ran was written down by Muhammad over a period of 23 years starting in 609 AD • The teachings were delivered by an angel (Jibril or Gabriel) • This text is the main text used by Muslim all over the world. Other Religious Writings?

  4. The Book of Mormon • The Mormon church claims that Joseph Smith received a vision from God of an angel who revealed a correction to the corrupted Bible. • This book tells the story of how God preserved His true message • This book reveals how the Israelites came to be in America as God’s true church • This book admits that it is to be believed in addition to the Old and New Testaments found in traditional Bibles as a more correct version. • First published in 1830 Other Religious Writings?

  5. Watchtower Publications & New World Translation • The Watchtower Society started in 1881 • A group of seven men who are of the “anointed” class with hope of a heavenly life • It is responsible for producing documents and publications for the Jehovah’s Witnesses • They are considered by Jehovah’s Witnesses to be spirit-led, although they deny that these men are inspired • These publications are deemed “necessary” for correctly understanding their “New World Translation” of the Bible. • The New World Translation is an alternative translation of the Bible that matches the doctrines and theologies of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Other Religious Writings?

  6. The Problem • The problem with any new “testament” or “inspired” writing is that they assume a problem with the original • They say it has been corrupted or lost over time • Another problem is that they all come well after Jesus • If this can happen, how can we know that these writing are final? • Another problem is that they all come from other sources • Paul is clear about teachings that are different from Scripture, even if they come from angels (Galatians 1.8-9) Other Religious Writings?

  7. Galatians 1.8-9 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. Other Religious Writings?

  8. The Bible is Sufficient • Ultimately, if we believe the Bible’s claims, then we must believe that the Bible is sufficient • “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3.16-17). • “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence” (2 Peter 1.3) Other Religious Writings?

  9. The Bible Stands Alone • Ultimately, we must know that the Bible wants to be our only source of God’s teachings • Repeated through the whole Bible is the command not to add to the Bible or take away from its teachings • “You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you” (Deuteronomy 4.2). • “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book” (Rev 22.18-19). Other Religious Writings?
