  3. AC Generator for backup Power

  4. Target Students:- Grade 13 (Electronics)

  5. Unit Summary • The latest crisis that has Pakistani’s from all walks of life up is the lack of electrical power throughout the country. While rolling blackouts or load shedding as its locally known has always been a staple of daily life in Pakistan, the problem has become acute in the last couple of years. In the second half of December, the situation got so bad that WAPDA & KESC (power generation entities in Pakistan) resorted to draconian levels of load shedding. The power cuts during this time amounted to 20-22 hours a day in most small cities.

  6. CONT… • Being an Electronic engineer we felt this need of time and decided to do a project with our students in which they will make their own self start generator for home and can offer it for sale to low income groups in their community. Students will be asked to assume the role of Electronic engineer as well as marketer. If someone sponsors this project then it is easier to launch the product. • The idea of the project is to facilitate students to use the skills like creativity, innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Communication, Collaboration, Leadership and Responsibility from the institution during this diploma of 3 years course. They will also be able to use the 21st Century Skills like Information, Media and Technology.

  7. Curriculum Framing Questions Essential Question • How can we overcome on power problems?

  8. Curriculum Framing Questions Unit Question • What are the resources production of electricity? • Which type of generators can be used to produce the electricity?

  9. Curriculum Framing Questions Content Questions • On which principle a generator works? • What is the difference between AC and DC generators? • Explain the working of prime movers? • Which devices are used to start and control the generator? • Why we choose the generator as resource of electricity? • How you can troubleshoot a generator? • What safety precautions will you follow during electric works?

  10. Targeted Content Standards and Benchmarks • Study and compare different circuit, analyze the behavior of different components. • Study and complete information about generators as well as motors. • Design a layout of the AC Generator. Check it through meters and oscilloscope and calibrate. • Students should share their projects with the generator seller and through e-mails can contacts with industries and for home users.

  11. Student Objectives/Learning Outcomes • At the end of the project my students will be able to: • Study about circuits, and different components like magnets, electromagnets, windings, rotor, stator, carbon brushes, armature, commutator etc. • Study circuit layout of Generator design, Principle, construction and working of generator • At the same time, students can also understand the principle, construction and working of motor

  12. Student Objectives/Learning Outcomes • Student will also be able to understand about the other resources of production of electricity and the basic theories such as Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction, Lenz’s law and energy conversion. • Survey market for the available Generator prices and price of each components used in its manufacture • Correct selection of measuring instrument like multi meter and oscilloscope. Present their project of assembling a Generator at low cost using power point presentation • It will groom our students to enhance their qualities of Initiativity, Self-Direction, Adaptability, confidence, Leadership, Responsibility and be aware of their own market value in their profession.
