Spanish Power • Phillip II inherited the western Hapsburg kingdom. • Spain was rich from gold in the New World. • The increased population growth in all of Europe there was a trigger of inflation. • Spain suppressed Portugal’s resistance, which lead Phillip II to inherit the kingdom in 1580. • Spain had gained more power on land and over seas.(Also Portugal's overseas empires in Africa, India, and Brazil into the Spanish orbit. • Spain conquered the southern part of the Netherlands.

Netherlands • Wealthiest country in all of Europe at the time. • Has a great variety of Protestants during the Reformations time period. • Second half of the 16th century the southern Netherlands made peace with Spain and most became Catholic . • There was revolts later that wanted Spain out the country. • Phillip II in 1559 departed from the Netherlands.

  6. Cardinal Granvelle • Also known as Antoine Perrenot (Changed his name in 1561) • Hoped check Protestant gains by internal church reform • Planned to establish a centralized government directed from Madrid • His GOAL was to politically docile and have a religiously uniform country

William of Orange • 1533-1584 • Also known as “the Silent” because he had small groups of trust • Place political autonomy and the well-being of Netherlands above religion • Was Catholic first, then changed to Lutheran, and finally chose to become a Calvinist • Married Anne of Saxony(Daughter of Lutheran elector Maurice) • Removed Granvelle from office in 1564

  10. Duke of Alba • High nobility in the Netherlands • Helped Spain in the revolt • Alliance were known as “Council of Troubles” in Spain and “Council of Blood” in the Netherland • He increased the taxes by 10%

Netherlands Independence • In an attempt to stop the Netherlands resistance Phillip II had a bounty for William of Orange • Union of Utrecht declared Phillip II no longer the ruler • Spanish efforts to take back Netherlands continued till the 1580s • Phillip II was then to busy with France and England to be focusing to conquer Netherlands • Northern provinces drove out Spanish soldiers by 1593 • By 1596 France and England recognized that Netherlands was independent from Spain
