  2. Wheat Scenario T. aestivum occupies Durum is 2nd most important species grown in the country. almost 96%. The aestivum wheat is invariably consumed as chapatti. Durum wheat is consumed in the form of Suji, Macaroni noodles, sevai, vermicelli, pasta and some local product like ``bati`` and ``baffle``.

  3. Area under wheat in various district of Madhya Pradesh

  4. In M.P. area is about 2 lakh hect. of estimate production will be about 5 to 6 lakh/tones.

  5. Best Durum varieties

  6. Quality parameters Higher protein High ß carotene contain & yellow berry minimum possible . The most important quality characters are – hardness, pasta-quality, semolina yellow colour pigmentation and protein content – ranging from 11.5 to 14.

  8. Constraints 1- Degradation of the soil and decline in groundwater storage and water table. 2- Forced heading and maturity due to short winter span resulting low productivity of wheat. 3- Weed infestation specially in deep black soil.

  9. 4- Poor soil and water management in canal area. 5- Support price and assured market exclusively for durum is not available.

  10. Future Thrust Encouraging organic farming. Increase in irrigated area through sprinkler system. propagation of technology amongs cultivators. Proper soil & water management specially in canal area. Development & increase of area under improved verities. Promoting processing unit infrastructure.

  11. Priority This Discussion does not mean that the importance of aestivum wheat had been eliminated. Durum and aestivum both are of equal importance in the state. However there is a possibility of export of durum from M.P. (in country & out of country) hence priority will be for durum.

  12. In Madhya Pradesh organic forming is being adopted on large scale, hence organic wheat both aestivun & durum will be produced.

  13. Conclusion Availability of new durum varieties Malav Ratna, Malavshree, Malav Shakti, Sudha, and among aestivums HI 1418, HI 1479, HI 1500, JWS 17 and NP 4010 are the new hopes in increasing production and productivity. Thus state has got tremendous opportunity to produce export quality wheat for entering in global trade in future.
