Part II: The “What” • Focus on experiences of Asian and Pacific Islander American groups. • Asian American Pan ethnicity (Le Espiritu) • Commonalities and differences across individual groups that fall under the collective identity “Asian and Pacific Islander”) • Some Major Themes and Topics: History of Immigration, migration, displacement and settlement, collective political action, and acculturation.

Part II: The “How” • Continue to deconstruct API experiences concepts in ethnic studies such as power/resistance, culture, identity, and social structure. • In Part I, we investigated individual API groups and the relationship between these groups. In Part II, our goal is to consider how these concepts shape one another.

  6. Some Key Questions • Are explanations for social inequality and conditions cultural or structural? • Are explanations the same or different among those who are API and those who aren’t? • How do the representations of cultural “others” serve to strengthen or reinforce existing power relationships? • How do strategies of Asian American identify formation speak back to/resist/critique existing power relations?

  7. Part II: The “Why” • Our goal is to think critically about issues of social inequality and poor community conditions. • In Part III, you will be conducting a research project based on an interview-based methodology, oral history. • To develop your research protocol, you will have to have thought about the histories of various API populations and the relationships between the course concepts.

  8. For Wednesday’s Class • Read two chapters on Chinese Americans. • Make note of observations that come up regarding this question: How have power-resistance, structure, culture, and identity shaped the Chinese American experience over time?
