  1. Integrated System for On-line TRace EXplosives detection in solid, liquid and vapor state Antonio Palucci – ENEA FIM-FISLAS Project coordinator Start up January 1st 2007 December 31th 2008 June 30th 2009

  2. Summary • Our goals • Achievements • Opportunities

  3. Main Aims • Trace detection of high energetic materials (i.e. explosive compounds and their precursors) with high resolution laser techniques • Development of two prototypes to be in future installed in check-in • Exploitation of possible integration LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) for particles and liquids substances. Atomic technique IR (Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy and/o laser Photo-Acoustic Spectrometer) for vapour absorption technique

  4. Partnership • ENEAproject coordinator - National Research Agency (Italy) • CNR – National Research Agency (Italy) • IPAC – SME (Austria) • vH&S–SME (Germany) • TelCon – SME (Italy) • RIS Carabinieri – Reparto Investigazioni Scientifiche dell’Arma dei Carabinieri

  5. Implemented high resolution laser techniques • LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) V. Lazic • LPAS (Laser PhotoAcoustic Spectroscopy) G. Giubileo • LRaman (Laser Raman Spectroscopy) S. Botti • CRDS (Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy) M. Snels • FT-IR (Fourier Transform InfraRed high resolution spectroscopy) S. N. Cesaro

  6. Materials employed • NO real explosive samples or mixed compounds such as forensic exhibit • Standard solutions of explosive compounds from different suppliers (Sigma, Accustandard, CPS, Sigma, Carlo Erba) for calibration purpose FTIR IFS 113v (Bruker) and IFS66 (Bruker) interferometers in the spectral range 10,000 ÷ 400 cm-1 at a resolution of 2 cm-1 or better.

  7. Developed prototypes Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy

  8. Laser technologies investigated • LPAS (Laser PhotoAcoustic Spectroscopy) • SERS (Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy)

  9. New facility @ 7 micron • Semi-conductor Quantum Cascade Laser, tunability electronic controlled • Compact Photoacustic cell for trace detection

  10. Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy SERS 1 ng • By using SERS we obtained: • High sensitivity • Fast detection • The possibility to use • hand held instrumentation • Stand-off detection 1 µg 0.4 ng

  11. Results obtained LIBS 0.1 – 1 ng HMX CRDS SERS 0.2 ng TNT LPAS

  12. Opportunities Expert - participation to the working groups of the Explosives Security Experts Task Force (ESETF Explosives Security Experts Task Force) established in January 2007 to June 2008, by the Direction Générale Justice, Liberté Et Sécurité of the European Commission

  13. Network on the Detection of Explosives (NDE) Tender JLS/2008/D1/020 2009-2010 + possible following 2 years • Main Aim is to support DG JLS with • EU expertize • Advice on concrete questions • Short policy briefs • Meetings • Mapping work on detection of explosives • Preparingstudies • Organisation of a biannual conference on detection of explosives

  14. ENEA for Security • Surveillance and monitoring • Intervention on threats • Remediation • Testing • Education & Training • Participation to ESRIF

  15. IMGS website

  16. ENEA for Security • Security 2009 • CUSTOM- Drugs And PreCUrsorSensing By ComplemenTing Low COst Multiple Techniques (SEC-2009.1.3.2) PI SELEX Rank 13 2010-2012 • Agreement between ENEA and Defence Ministry – Military NBC school Rieti • Agreement between ENEA and Finmeccanica for dual use technologies • Explosive, Drugs and Biohazard

  17. ISOTREX OPPORTUNITIES • Complete the work with next Security calls • Join larger projects • Exploit EU opportunities
