  2. What is ADHD? • ADHD is known to be a common childhood disorder and can continue into adulthood. • Symptoms: • Difficulty keeping focusand paying attention • Difficulty with behavior control • Hyperactivity or over-activity

  3. 3 Subtypes of ADHD • Predominantly hyperactive-impulse • Predominantly inattentive • Combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive

  4. Symptoms in Children • Inattention • Hyperactivity • Impulsivity

  5. Inattention • Has trouble: • Focusing • Switches from one activity to another quickly • Misses details • Forgetful • Processing information • Following directions • Listening when spoken to

  6. Hyperactivity • Fidgeting and squirming • Can’t sit still • Nonstop talking • Can’t perform quiet tasks

  7. Impulsivity • Very impatient • Doesn’t want to wait • Tends to act on instinct • Blurts things out • Openly shows emotions • Interrupts conversations

  8. Statistics • Effects 3-5% of children • It is thought to be started when the brain is developing. • Most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder of children.

  9. Treatment • Medications: • Adderall (amphetamine) • Concerta (methylphenidate) • Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine) • Ritalin (methylphenidate) • Psychotherapy • Set specific goals for therapy. • Follow a daily routine.
