  1. ClassAct SRS enabled. In this presentation you will: • identify applications of hydraulics

  2. In this presentation you will see examples of where hydraulics are used in real world applications. Next >

  3. Uses of Hydraulics Hydraulic systems are used where large, precise forces are required. Common examples include: • Vehicle power steering • Dump trucks • Flight simulators • Hydraulic jacks • Heavy earth moving equipment • Vehicle brake systems Next >

  4. Hydraulic pump Landinggear Actuatingcylinder Engine power Example: Aircraft Hydraulic Systems All modern aircraft contain hydraulicsystems to operate mechanisms, such as: • Flaps • Wing position • Landing gear Hydraulic power is provided by a pump that is coupled to an engine. Power is distributed to systems throughout the aircraft by transmission lines. Hydraulic power is converted to mechanical power by means of an actuating cylinder or hydraulic motor. Next >

  5. Question 1 Which aircraft system is NOT powered by hydraulics? A) Landing gear B) Propulsion C) Wing position D) Flaps

  6. Brake pedal pressure Brake caliper Pads Piston Pads Rotor Piston inside caliper Caliper Rotor Example: A Vehicle Braking System The function of a vehicle braking system is to stop or slow down a moving vehicle. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure is transmitted to the piston in the brake caliper of the brakes. This pressure forces the brake pads against the brake rotor, which is rotating with the wheel. The friction between the brake pad and the rotor causes the wheel to slow down, and eventually stop. Next >

  7. Question 2 Hydraulic pressure pushes what, to squeeze the brake pads? A) The rotor B) The caliper C) The piston D) The brake pedal

  8. Example: Industrial Hydraulics Hydraulic systems are widely used in industry. They may be integrated with pneumatic and or electromechanical systems. Typical applications include: • Presses • Platform hoists • Hydraulic motors • Jacks Next >

  9. Example: Construction Machines Construction machines use hydraulics to move heavy loads. Hydraulics in construction machines can be used to move a large load, with a small force. Typical machines include: • Cranes • Skip / loaders • Dump trucks • Excavators All of these machines use hydraulic pressure to move powerful cylinders that operate buckets, booms, blades and raise beds. Next >

  10. Other Systems Other typical applications, not covered in detail include: • Elevators • Dampers used for vehicle suspension • Ship anchor windlasses Next >

  11. Summary You should now be aware of: • Aircraft systems that use hydraulics • Hydraulics used in vehicle braking systems • Industrial applications of hydraulic systems • Construction machines that use hydraulics End >
