What is the OSSRC Advanced Referee Academy Program? • Bridge - between normal recertification clinics and Pro Academy • Participants – Grade 7 and 6 referees looking to improve their game to the next level. • Graduation – Ready to be center referee in PDL-level match (as judged by Ted and Brian AND Chico and Mike) • A Progression - NOT a one-time deal to check a box to move from Grade 7 to Grade 6 • Leaders – Brian Goodlander (SDA) and Ted Patterson (D1 DDA) • Instructors – Brian and Ted plus guest instructors from Pro Academy participants

  4. 2012 OSSRC Advanced Referee Academy Program • Classroom Sessions – Monthly clinics through April • Indoor Sessions – Cincinnati area experiment. Potential roll-out to other districts • GCASL Opportunities – Cincinnati adult league. Fri/Sun games. Informal and formal assessments (signups) • Fitness Work – Opportunities to train with Pro Academy participants (voluntary)

  5. 2012 OSSRC Advanced Referee Academy Program • Tournament Events – Traditional academy events (signups) • MASC – April 21-22(U17-U19B) @ Fairfield (1 field = 7 referees needed) • Blue Chip College Showcase (Mens) – April 21-22 (U17-U19B) @ Oxford (1 field = 7 referees needed) • Warrior Classic – May 26-28 (U17-U19B) @ Dayton (2 fields = 14 referees needed) • Founders Cup – TBD (D1-3 Adult matches)

  7. What we expect of you • Attendance – classroom, tournaments, events, etc. • Willingness to Learn – open mind, try new things • Participation – engaged, not just present but involved • Professionalism – you represent the academy, OSSRC, and coordinators.

  10. REQUIREMENTS FOR UPGRADE FROM GRADE 7 to GRADE 6

  11. REQUIREMENTS FOR UPGRADE FROM GRADE 7 to GRADE 6 * ALL ASSESSMENTS MUST MEET SUFFICIENT CHALLENGE CRITERIA. * Failure of referee assessment requires 2 passing assessments (1 as make-up, 1 to meet requirement). Failure of assistant referee assessment does not require make-up assessment (i.e., pass 1 assessment as AR). * All assessments must be completed in 12 month period. No more than 2 failing assessments per period. ** OOD Assessment requirement can be met by OOD assessor coming to referee district or referee coming to OOD game with OOD assessor

Grade 6 Referee Expectations • Demonstrates understanding of subtle and tactical fouls. • Demonstrates high level of fitness and dynamic positioning to ensure a proper view of challenges. • Demonstrates proper mechanics and positioning for static restarts. • Uses personality to help defuse flash points and to manage players. • Demonstrated consistency in fouls recognition, foul discrimination and use of cards. Referee demonstrates all the previous grade skills plus the addition of higher level skills in managing the game and players:

Grade 6 Referee Expectations • Demonstrates ability to read play & anticipate rather than react • Demonstrates good eye contact with AR’s on all dead ball situations and makes good use of their assistance on offside decisions and fouls • Demonstrates knowledge of the LOTG, proper mechanics and procedures, knowledge of recent memoranda, & proper restarts for all situations. Is beginning to develop a solid and thorough understanding of most recent teachings and directives • Demonstrates some preventive refereeing skills.

Dissent Examples Forms of Dissent • Actions (verbal and visual) that bring the game into disrepute • Actions which convey aggressiveness to an official • Mass confrontation around official • Words, tone, body language, facial expressions which demonstrate a negative, condescending attitude toward an official

  20. Dissent Examples Forms of Dissent • Extended nature and persistence of player’s action • Waving hands, kicking ball away, charging toward an official, player restrained by other players • Strong, excessive loud comments • Gestures directed toward official that show disgust or disrespect

  21. Dissent • Ask yourself: • “Is this a quick emotional outburst or dissent?” • If it is an “outburst,” consider alternative methods of addressing the behavior. • If it is dissent, then the referee must caution the player.
