  1. Vocabulary this week!

  2. Election - pg. 20 • How people vote for someone to serve in an office. To get ready for the election, the students are thinking about who might make a good leader.

  3. Campaign – pg. 23 • An organized effort to accomplish a purpose. Cricket must be spending her whole allowance on the campaign, Julio thought.

  4. Represent – pg. 24 • Speak for or act for someone else. Going to the meeting with Mr. Herbertson was a good opportunity for Cricket to represent the class.

  5. Candidate – pg. 27 • A person running for office. Mr. Flores said the students could nominate anyone they choose, even if the candidate did not have a poster on the wall.

  6. Confidence – pg. 27 • Belief in self or ability Julio felt it was his job to give Lucas confidence.

  8. Background Knowledge Class President is an excerpt from the book with the same title. Its genre is realistic fiction. • Elements of realistic fiction are: • The characters behave as people do in real life. • The setting of the story is or could be a real place. • The events are based on a conflict that could occur in real life. • Toward the end of this selection, the main character, Julio, is nominated to run for class president. One of his potential opponents comments that Julio should not be allowed to run for class president because he is Puerto Rican. (Discuss) • What do you think are some important qualities for a class president to have? Why?

Preview and Prepare(You will use your anthology book) • What is the title and the name of the author and illustrator? • Preview the selection’s pictures, what can you gather from them? • What do you think this story has to do with the unit’s theme Cooperation and Communication? • What do you think the author’s purpose for writing this selection is?
