  6. CASE STUDYDaily reports from a 4,000 miles trip through the desert Event: Plymouth Dakar Challenge 2005   Mission: In order to raise money for the Children‘s Hospice South West (UK) the drivers of Team Babe Magnet embarked on a 4,000 mile trip from Devon (UK) to Gambia (West Africa).Their daily progress and experiences were reported on their website to encourage further donations and to keep their fans, friends and sponsors up to date. Footage for a video documentary was also provided. Technical: Using the SCOTTY Mobile and EMS Storm antenna for satellite connection the drivers were able to record videoclipsand send them to a British Broadcasting Corporation. They compiled diary reports and send pictures to their webmaster. Benefits: The SCOTTY Mobile did a perfect job.“We were extremely happy to be able to make use of such a ruggedised communication tool. It was a weird feeling – sitting in the desert with no sign of civilisation around you, yet still have the ability to access the Internet!“(Phil Butcher, Team Babe Magnet)

  7. CASE STUDYSCOTTY Mobile at Mt. Everest • Customer: TV2, Sweden   • Mission: An expedition to Mt. Everest was undertaken with the goal to clean up the base station and to remove old oxygen tanks. TV2 Sweden accompanied Göran Kropp, a famous alpinist on this mission. The progress of the work was broadcasted in daily live reports back to Sweden.   • Technical: 64 kbps connection via portable Inmarsat antenna; batteries with solar cells as a back-up; additional external cameras and microphones   • Benefits: The SCOTTY Mobile was chosen because it fulfilled the tough weight and flexibility requirements of the mission. As the base station is only accessible by yak, the customer needed a light and powerful broadcasting system, enabling them to transmit video/audio/data simultaneously.

  8. CASE STUDYTsunami Disaster Relief • Customer: Austrian Armed Forces   • Mission: After large coastal areas in Sri Lanka were destroyed by the Tsunami in Dec. 2004, the Austrian Armed Forces sent a 77 head-strong Armed Forces Disaster Relief Unit (AFDRU) to the city of Galle, where the drinking water pipelines had been severely damaged. The mission was to build up water purification plants in order to provide the citizens with potable water.   • Technical: Satellite communication via the SCOTTY Mobile and EMS Storm antenna and modem enabled a 64 kbps connection to headquarters in Austria.   • Benefits: With all communication infrastructure being devastated, the SCOTTY Mobile proved to provide a reliable and regular video connection to the headquarters for briefings, sending reports and pictures as well as receiving orders.

  9. CASE STUDYBreaking News from the Outback • Event: Crocodile Trophy 2004, Australia   • Mission: Known as one of the world‘s hardest and most challenging mountain bike races, the Crocodile Trophy receives a lot of media attention. Every single day of the race, journalists had to be provided with footage, pictures and reports. Barely existing communication infrastructure in the Australian outback was an additional hurdle.   • Technical: Using the SCOTTY Mobile with store & forward option, the organizers were not only able to record videos and to send them directly to the broadcast stations – it even served them to write their daily reports and to mail them with attached pictures to journalists and their support team. The Mobile was powered from a vehicle battery. EMS Storm served as Satcom equipment.   • Benefits: No other communication equipment offered such a wide variety of important features to satisfy the communication requirements of the organizers than the SCOTTY Mobile.
