Executive Branch. The Executive Branch implements and enforces laws and provides executive direction to government. The Executive Branch’s highest position is Governor. The Governor is elected every 4 years. The Governor can serve unlimited amount of terms.

  1. Executive Branch The Executive Branch implements and enforces laws and provides executive direction to government

  2. The Executive Branch’s highest position is Governor. The Governor is elected every 4 years. The Governor can serve unlimited amount of terms. Patrick Quinn is Illinois 41st Governor. Governor

What does the governor do? • The Governor appoints the state department directors. • Each year the Governor appears before the General Assembly in January to report on the condition of the state and announce the programs which will be most important during the next year. • In April, the Governor appears before the General Assembly to present the budget for the state. • The Governor also has the important job of reviewing all legislation that passes the General Assembly before it becomes law.

  4. The Governor decides if the legislation is good or bad for the people of Illinois. If the Governor agrees with the legislation, the Governor will sign it. The Governor can also veto or reject a piece of legislation if it is not good for the people in the state. Finally, the Governor can make small changes to legislation if the changes make will make the law better but do not alter the meaning of the bill. This is called an amendatory veto. What does the governor do?

  5. Lieutenant Governor • The Lieutenant Governor is elected with the Governor. The Lieutenant Governor helps the Governor do his/her job. The Lieutenant Governor may also have programs of his/her own. • Patrick Quinn was Illinois last lieutenant governor.

  6. The Secretary of State is responsible for maintaining all of the official state records and the state seal. In addition, the Secretary of State issues all driver's licenses and license plates. The Secretary of State serves as the state librarian. Jesse White Secretary of State

  7. The job of the Attorney General is to: Advocate on behalf of all of the people of Illinois; Legislate with members of the General Assembly for new laws. Litigate to ensure state laws are followed and respected. The Attorney General provides services that reach every corner of Illinois.   8. Sometimes people get the Comptroller and the Treasurer mixed up. The Comptroller is the chief financial officer for the state and is responsible for keeping track of the state's money.
