The Real World • More Americans get news from the internet than newspapers or radio • 75% hear of news via e-mail or updates on social media sites • 61% get at least some of their news on-line • 92% get their news from more than one platform Source: Pew Internet and American Life Project March, 2010

The Real World • Television news is still important • 75% of households with TV’s watch the news • Network newscasts still have more viewers than the cable news operations • Traditional TV news programs like 60 Minutes, 20-20, Dateline, still attract viewers • Most of those viewers are getting ready to die

  8. The Real World • Newspaper print readership has declined from 70% to 54% • If on-line newspaper readership is included, readership would rise to 70% • Newspaper readers tend to be more educated and politically active • Newspapers are still important, especially community newspapers

  9. The Real World • Don’t ignore RADIO! • More than 90% listen to radio, 54% listen to news • Talk radio still a factor • Local radio a big player if locally owned • Drive time in bigger markets important for marketing and advertising • Corporate Radio waning

  10. The Real World • Cable TV struggling, but not going away • Nationwide, more than 70% of households have cable • Cable TV still an outlet for local governments through the PEG channels • Cable advertising a bargain • Domestic problems over remote

  11. The Real World • And now a word or more about SOCIAL MEDIA • Don’t ignore it, embrace it • Governor candidates take advantage of growth in social media • Media outlets rely on postings from viewers, readers, listeners, government agencies, corporate flacks

  13. The Real World • Over 70% of teens and young adults use social networking sites • 40% of adults over 30 use social networking sites • 4 out of 5 US on-line adults use social media at least once a month • On-line users access 2 to 5 on-line news sources

  14. The Real World • Facebook – 85 million users in the U.S. • Twitter – 20 million users a month • You Tube – 100 million monthly viewers in the U.S. – 6.3 billion videos viewed • Wikipedia – 60 million users a month • Blogs – estimated 133 million users – about 900,000 posts every hour

  15. The Real World • 90% of all social media users LURK (read – observe, but don’t contribute) • 9% contribute from time-to-time • 1% participate frequently and account for most of the contributions

  16. The Real World • About BLOGS • Read them for entertainment purposes only • Don’t participate unless you have a thick skin • Contact the Blog operator if there is offensive material posted • Realize that bloggers are anonymous so they are emboldened to flame
