Juan 20:19 - 31

1. Juan20:19 - 31 19 Al anochecer del día de la resurrección, estando cerradas las puertas de la casa, donde se hallaban los discípulos, por miedo a los judíos, se presentó Jesús en medio de ellos y les dijo: “La paz esté con ustedes”. 20 Dicho esto, les mostró las manos y el costado. Cuando los discípulos vieron al Señor, se llenaron de alegría.

2. 21 De nuevo les dijo Jesús: “La paz esté con ustedes. Como el Padre me ha enviado, así también los envío yo”. 22 Después de decir esto, sopló sobre ellos y les dijo: “Reciban el Espíritu Santo. 23 A los que les perdonen los pecados, les quedarán perdonados; y a los que no se los perdonen, les quedarán sin perdonar”. 24 Tomás, uno de los Doce, a quien llamaban el Gemelo, no estaba con ellos cuando vino Jesús,

3. 25 y los otros discípulos le decían: “Hemos visto al Señor”. Pero él les contestó: “Si no veo en sus manos la señal de los clavos y si no meto mi dedo en los agujeros de los clavos y no meto mi mano en su costado, no creeré”. 26 Ocho días después, estaban reunidos los discípulos a puerta cerrada y Tomás estaba con ellos. Jesús se presentó de nuevo en medio de ellos y les dijo: “La paz esté con ustedes”.

4. 27 Luego le dijo a Tomás: “Aquí están mis manos; acerca tu dedo. Trae acá tu mano, métela en mi costado y no sigas dudando, sino cree”. 28 Tomás le respondió: “¡Señor mío y Dios mío!” 29 Jesús añadió: “Tú crees porque me has visto;dichosos los que creen sin haber visto”.

5. 30 Otros muchos signos hizo Jesús en presencia de sus discípulos, pero no están escritos en este libro. 31 Se escribieron éstos para que ustedes crean que Jesús es el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios, y para que, creyendo, tengan vida en su nombre. Palabra del Señor

John20:19 - 31 19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

8. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit. 23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” 24 Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.

9. 25 So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”

10. 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

11. 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. 31 But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name. Gospel of the Lord

13. Reflections on John 20:19 - 31 Reflexiones en Juan 20:19 - 31 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Apr. 27, 2014 This is the Second Sunday of Easter, and it is also Mercy Sunday. We will make some observations regarding the characteristics of the risen Christ. What was his first message to the Apostles? And how did Thomas react to all this? We will say a few words about Mother Faustina.

14. Este es el Segundo Domingo de Pascua, y también es el Domingo de la Misericordia. Vamos a hacer unas observaciones acerca de las características de Cristo Resucitado. ¿Cuál fue su primer mensaje a los Apóstoles? ¿Cómo reaccionó Tomas a todo esto? Vamos a hablar unas cuantas palabras de la Madre Faustina.

15. We see that the Lord came to the Apostles on the evening of the first day of the week. We note how the divinity now manifests itself. Jesus now has the power to come through locked doors. He is accessible to all. He is not limited by time and space. He knows all things. He knew where the fearful Apostles were hiding. And he knew they needed his visit.

16. Vemos que el Señor vino a los Apóstoles al atardecer del primer día de la semana. Notamos como la divinidad ahora se manifiesta. Jesús ahora tiene poder para entrar por puertas cerradas. 17. “Peace be with you!” From now on this is what we need to check. It is characteristic of the Lord to give his peace. There are many other words that come to mind. Peace is well being, tranquility of order. It means that you have integrity, and a measure of understanding. It means you are healed, and are healthy emotionally, mentally, and physically. All of these things Jesus gave the Apostles that first Easter.

18. “¡Paz este con ustedes! De hoy en adelante, esto es lo que hay que examinar. Es característico del Señor dar su paz. Hay muchas otras palabras que vienen a la mente. La paz es el bien-estar, la tranquilidad de orden. Quiere decir que tienes integridad, y una medida de entendimiento. Quiere decir que estas sanado, y con salud emocional, mental, y física. Todas estas cosas Jesús dio a los Apóstoles en ese primer día de Pascua.

19. He showed them his hands and his side. He wanted them to remember all he had suffered for them and for all of us. Indeed “By his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). When we contemplate the wounds of Jesus, we are healed. There is great spiritual benefit to spend time before a crucifix and adore the Lord, thanking him for all the pain and sorrow he went through for our salvation.

20. Les mostró sus manos y su costado. Él quería que recordaran todo lo que había sufrido por ellos y por todos nosotros. En verdad “Por sus llagas somos sanados” (Isaías 53:5). Al contemplar las llagas de Jesús, somos sanados. Hay gran beneficio espiritual pasar tiempo antes de un crucifijo adorando al Señor, dándole gracias por todas las penas y dolor que sufrió por nuestra salvación.

21. Anytime we see someone suffering more than we suffer, we realize how blessed we are. In the case of the Lord, we know how unfair it all was: his betrayal, his trial, his rejection by his own people, the torture he went through even though he had done nothing to deserve it.

22. Cualquier tiempo que vemos a alguien sufrir más que lo que nosotros sufrimos, nos damos cuenta que bendecidos estamos. En el caso del Señor, sabemos que injusto fue todo lo de su pasión y muerte: la traición, la prueba, su rechazo por su propia gente, la tortura que sufrió aunque no había hecho nada para merecerlo.

23. St. Ignatius (Spiritual Exercises # 54), recommends we talk to Jesus on the cross and talk about his wounds, consoling him. Talk like a friend consoling a friend. Pause, and let the Lord talk back to you. He will inspire you with beautiful thoughts. By his holy grace you will want to do something for Jesus in return. Hopefully it will lead to bringing forth fruits worthy of repentance.

24. San Ignacio (Ejercicios Espirituales # 54), recomienda que le platiquemos a Jesús clavado en la cruz, y hablar de sus llagas, consolándolo. Hay que hablar con Él como un amigo consolando a un amigo. Toma una pausa, y deja que el Señor te hable. Él te va a inspirar con bellísimos pensamientos. Por su santa gracia vas a querer hacer algo en cambio por Jesús. Ojalá que llegue a traer frutos dignos de arrepentimiento en tu vida.

25. Did you notice that the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord? That means they were happy as can be, to know firsthand that he was indeed raised from the dead. They did not have to go by what anybody else said. Joy is the sure sign that God has come into the world. It is also called consolation. Pope Francis says we need to speak more about the joy of the Gospel.

26. ¿Se fijaron que los discípulos regocijaron cuando vieron al Señor? Quiere decir que en verdad estaban felices al saber por experiencia propia que Jesús había resucitado. No tenían que depender de lo que otros decían. El gozo es una seña asegurada de que Dios ha venido al mundo. También se llama consolación. El Papa Francisco dice que tenemos que hablar más acerca de la alegría del Evangelio.

27. Jesus told us that the Father had sent him, and now he was going to send the Apostles in the same way. In Mark 16:15 he said to them: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” It is not only for the people. It is also for all creation. That means we need to look out for nature also. Recently we are becoming aware of the fact that we need to care for the environment.

28. Jesús nos dijo que el Padre lo había mandado, y ahora Él iba a mandar a los Apóstoles de la misma manera. En Marcos 16:15 les dijo: “Id a todo el mundo y proclamen el Evangelio a toda criatura.” No es solo para la gente. También es para toda la creación. Esto quiere decir que necesitamos cuidar la naturaleza. Recientemente nos estamos dando cuenta que es necesario cuidar al ambiente.

29. They would need the strength of the Holy Spirit. So he breathed on them and said: “Receive the Holy Spirit.” We know from the Last Supper that Jesus promised to send us the Holy Spirit, who would teach us all things when we were ready (John 16:12). “I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”

30. Necesitarían la fuerza del Espirito Santo. Por eso soplo sobre ellos, y les dijo: “Reciban el Espirito Santo.” Sabemos que en la Ultima Cena Jesús les prometió mandarles al Espirito Santo, que les ha de enseñar todo cuando estén listos (Juan 16:12). “Todavía tengo mucho que decirles, pero no lo pueden aguantar hoy. Cuando el Espirito de la verdad venga, Él los guiara a toda la verdad.”

31. Jesus also told the Apostles: “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them.” The Apostles were given this power to forgive sins in the name of the Lord. In the Catholic Church we have called this a Sacrament . In the Sacrament of Reconciliation the priest forgives sins in the Name of the Lord.

32. Jesús también les dijo a los Apóstoles: “Cuyos pecados perdonen serán perdonados.” A los Apóstoles se les concedió el poder de perdonar pecados en el Nombre del Señor. En la Iglesia Católica le llamamos a esto un Sacramento. En el Sacramento de la Reconciliación el sacerdote perdona pecados en el Nombre del Señor.

33. Perhaps we need to remember Thomas. We learn that it is not such a good idea to come to the Lord making all kinds of demands. Nor should we insist on having things “our way.” It is not for us to dictate conditions to God. Rather, in all humility, we should seek his holy will and submit to it, with gratitude in our hearts for having been forgiven our arrogant ways.

34. Quizás hay que recordar a Tomas. Aprendemos que no es tan buena idea venir al Señor haciendo toda clase de demandas. Tampoco debo insistir en tener todo a mi manera. No es para nosotros dictar condiciones a Dios. Al contrario, con toda humildad, hay que buscar su santa voluntad y someternos a ella, con gratitud en nuestros corazones por haber sido perdonados nuestra arrogancia.

35. Since this is Mercy Sunday, allow me to say a few words about Mother Faustina. The Lord appeared to Mother Faustina Kowalska on February 22, 1931. His hand was raised in blessing. From beneath his white garment, at the breast, there were emanating two large rays: one red, another pale. The two rays denote Blood and Water. The red ray stands for the Blood of Jesus, which is the life of souls. The pale ray stands for the Water that makes souls righteous. These issued from the Lord’s heart when the lance on the Cross opened it. Whoever approaches the Fount of Life on this day and asks for mercy will be granted complete remission of sins and punishment (Dairy of St. Maria Faustina, # 299).

37. Como este es el Domingo de la Misericordia, permítanme decir algo de la Madre Faustina. El Señor se le apareció a la Madre Faustina Kowalska en el día 22 de Febrero de1931. Su mano estaba levantada en bendición. Desde debajo de sus vestiduras blancas, en el pecho, salían dos rayos grandes: uno rojo, y el otro pálido. Los dos rayos indican Sangre y Agua. El rayo rojo representa la Sangre de Jesús, que es la vida de las almas. El rayo pálido representa el Agua que hace a las almas justas. Estos rayos salieron del Corazón del Señor cuando fue penetrado por la lanza en la cruz. Cualquiera que se enfoque a la Fuente de la Vida en este día y pide la misericordia será concedido remisión completa de sus pecados y de sus castigos (Diario de Santa Maria Faustina # 299).

39. Jesus told Mother Faustina we could comfort his Heart by telling the whole world about his goodness. He also revealed a secret of his Heart: he suffers from chosen souls because they are ungrateful. Their love is lukewarm, and they have no desire to experience a sweet intimacy with him in their hearts. Their distrust hurts him very much. This leads to scorning Jesus, and spurning his love, and remaining distant from him. They do not wish to hear his call (Dairy of St. Maria Faustina, # 580).

40. Jesús le dijo a la Madre Faustina que podíamos confortar a su Corazón contándole a todo el mundo de su bondad. También revelo un secreto de su Corazón: Él sufre de las almas escogidas porque son ingratas. Su amor es tibio, y no tienen ningún deseo de experimentar una intimidad dulce con Él en sus corazones. Su desconfianza le duele mucho. Eso llega al desprecio de Jesús, y al menospreciar de su amor, y al quedarse distantes de Él. No desean oír su llamada (Diario de Santa Maria Faustina #580).

41. Hopefully, these few words will touch our hearts and get us closer to the Lord in an intimate and profound way, with sorrow in our hearts and with a desire for repentance. May the Lord, on this Mercy Sunday, pardon our sins. Together with Saint Maria Faustina we say: “Jesus, we trust in you!”

42. ¡ Ojalá ! que estas cuantas palabras toquen nuestros corazones y nos acerquen al Señor de una manera intima y profunda, con dolor de corazón y deseo de arrepentimiento. Que el Señor, en este Domingo de la Misericordia, nos perdone. Unámonos con Santa Maria Faustina diciendo: “Jesús, ¡confió en ti!”
