What’s in a wave? • A wave is a repeating disturbance or movement that transfers energy through matter or space. • Ocean waves disturbs the water and transfers the energy through it. • Waves can be different types there can be waves so you can hear music, waves that warm your food in the microwave, and waves that are in the ocean every day.

  3. Waves and Energy • When there is a disturbance in the water, as if a rock of some sort was dropped into the water a ripple is formed. • The ripple is formed by the energy from the falling rock. • The molecules then passes the energy along to the next molecules, those molecules then passes to its next molecules, and so on creating the ripple.

  4. Wave and Matter • A moving wave is energy. • It does not move objects that it passes. • Only the waves moves forward.

  5. Making Waves • A wave will only travel as long as it has energy to carry it. • Vibrating is anything that moves up and down or back and forth in a rhythm like way. • All waves are produced by a vibrating movement.

  6. Mechanical Waves • Medium is the matter the waves travel through. • Sound waves that travel through air. • Ocean waves travel through water. • Medium can be a solid, a liquid, a gas, or a combination. • Not all waves need a medium, some waves can travel through space. • Such as light and radio waves. • Mechanical waves can only travel through matter.

  7. Transverse Waves • Transverse wave, matter in the medium moves back and forth at right angles to the direction that the wave travels. • Transverse waves is one kind of wave of Mechanical wave. WaterMovement WAVE

  8. Compressional Wave • In a compressional wave, matter in the medium moves back and forth along the same direction that the wave travels. • The wave carries energy, but not matter. • Compressional waves also are called longitudinal waves.

  9. Sound Waves • Sound waves are compressional waves as when noise is made. • This is created when nearby air molecules are pushed together by the vibrations. • Sound waves can also travel through other mediums. Such as water and wood. • These particles are pushed together and moved apart as the sound waves move through them. • When sound wakes enter your ear it causes your eardrum to vibrate.

  10. Water Waves • Water waves are not fully transverse waves. • The water moves up and down as the waves goes by. • It moves back and forth in short distances. • The low part of the wave can be formed only by pushing water forward or backward toward the high part of the wave. Then goes back to the original place. • This motion causes the water to move in circles.

  11. Seismic Waves • Seismic waves are created by vibrates braking the crust of the earth, carry energy outward . • Seismic waves is a wave of both compressional and transverse waves. • They can travel through Earth and on the surface. • More energy is released by the more the crust moves during an earthquake.
