  1. Introduction to Essays Therefore, the key points are: In the poem ‘Two Scavengers….’ By Lawrence Ferlinghetti the poet shows the contrast between rich and poor.’ In an essay structure, demonstrate how the poet achieves this.

  2. Gather Your Information Write all of the examples you found in the poem in the two tables on the board.

  3. Begin Your Paragraph Idea: The sentence which introduces the idea of your paragraph. The poem ‘two Scavengers….’ shows contrast of rich and poor through the behavior of the scavengers in the poem. Explained: This sentence tells the reader that the writer will be answering the question by showing the behavior of the scavengers.

  4. Example: How the example is seen in the poem. The scavengers are two gargabemen who are waiting at a traffic light and, coincidently, stopped beside a Mercedes. The poem shows how the garbage men look down at the two people in the Mercedes as they are positioned on their garbage truck. Explanation: This gives the reader more information regarding the question but it has not mentioned technique of quote yet.

  5. Quote: Offer evidence from the poem to support you idea and example. This idea can be seen in the line ‘…looking down into an elegant open Mercedes’ Explanation: The quote supports what the writer has stated in the idea and example by offering a quote which shows exactly what the question in asking.

  6. Technique: show what technique is seen in the quote and explain the effect on the poem. How it shows meaning. The poet has chosen to use a pun to show the difference between rich and poor. The double meaning can be seen in the words ‘looking down’. The garbage men are literally looking down into the Mercedes but the suggested meaning offers another perspective. To look down suggests the behavior of a scavenger bird and, thus, reinforcing the status of the garbage men. Explanation: The writer is explaining the quote by showing the technique and what the effect is. Furthermore, they are continuously making reference to the question.

  7. Link: Linking back all your analysis to the question showing you have answered the question. Therefore, it can be seen that Ferlinghetti uses the behavior of the garbage men to show the contrast between rich and poor. Explanation: The writer has summed up the whole paragraph. They have also used words from the question to show the link and show they have answered the question.
