  2. OBJECTIVES for THIS UNIT • Students will learn the four stages of ALCOHOL DEPENDENCE. • In Essance how does experimentation lead to ALCOHOLISM? • What does alcohol do to the body. • What exactly is ALCOHOLISM-

  3. Alcohol Abuse vs. Alcoholism • "Alcohol is the most widely used and abused drug in our society." • "75% of domestic violence incodents occur while one party is under the influence of alcohol."

  4. Alcohol Abuse- • Drinking too much alcohol, drinking it too often, or drinking it at inappropriate times.

  5. Alcoholism- • When drinking interupts the daily activities, relationships, and responsibilities of the participant example- Losing a job, Losing a relationship SYMPTOMS OFALCOHOLISM • - drinker is physically and emotionally dependant. • - drinker will suffer physical pain without alcohol.

  6. Social Drinking- - drinking alcohol as part of a party, or social situation. • Not alone, not to get drunk.

  7. STAGES OF ALCOHOL DEPENDANCE 1. Problems of drinking- • Experimentation to a regular pattern of abuse. • Drink to avoid boredom, escape anxiety and stress, cope with depression.

  8. 2. Tolerance- Develops after repeated drinking. • Takes more alcohol to feel the same effect. • Neglect of family, friends, work, is beginning

  9. 3. Dependence- • Drinkers body begins to need alcohol to function normally. • Without alcohol drinker is anxious, shaking, and nausious. 4. Alcoholism- • Addiction to Alcohol. • Will substitute alcohol before health leading to malnutrition.

  11. We all Want the Same Things • Happiness, Acceptance, and Success • How can alcohol affect us reaching our goals? • Sometimes we can run into a roadblock during our life

FAMILY MEMBERS of an alcoholic • - Feel guilty • - Victims of Violence • - Neglected and Isolated • - Protect the Alcoholic • Enable- helping the addict avoid negative consequences for their behavior. • example- calling in sick to work. • Codependency- Sacraficing personal needs in order to meet the needs of the addict.

  13. PREGNANCY AND ALCOHOL • In 1999 and 2000 approx. 12 percent of pregnant women continued to use alcohol. • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)- a set of physical and mental defects that affect a fetus that has been exposed to aclohol. • - FAS is the leading preventable cause of mental retardation.

  14. TREATMENT- • Must be supervised. Withdrawal can last up to 25 hours. • Withdrawal includes • - Clammy skin • - Vomiting • - Nausia • - Hallucinations (seeing, hearing, Feeling). • - Uncontrolable - Seizures • - Sweating. • - Paranoia
