Quebec Funding Agencies Which agency should I apply to?? • Fonds Société et Culture (FQRSC) • Social Sciences and Humanities • Arts and Literature • Fonds Nature et Technologies (FQRNT) • Natural Science, Mathematics or Engineering • Fonds de recherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ) • Human Health Research Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

  5. No Multiple Applications to Quebec Funding Agencies • An applicant can only submit one application per level per year to FRSQ, FQRNT or FQRSC. • Filing to 2 agencies will be blocked by the online application. Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

Federal Funding Agencies Which agency should I apply to?? • Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) • Social Sciences and Humanities • Arts and Literature • Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council (NSERC) • Natural Science, Mathematics or Engineering • Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) • Human Health Research Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

  7. No Multiple Applications to Federal Funding Agencies • Policy since 2001 : • An applicant can only submit one application per year to NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC. • Filing to 2 councils may result in a cancelled offer. Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

  8. FQRSC Eligibility • Applicants to the Master’s Award must have a cumulative undergraduate average of A-. At McGill = 3.70, except BCL/LLB = 3.55. Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

FRSQ and CIHR Direct Applications • Transcripts • Deadline to order McGill transcripts:September 26, 2005 for Students applying through McGill • Order McGill Transcripts via Minerva for pick-up (Option 2 on Minerva) • Order Transcripts from other Universities as soon as possible • Order certified copies of overseas transcripts from department by September 26, using special request form Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

Fall Competitions Advice • follow instructions exactly • adhere to format guidelines (e.g., font, page limits) • applications must be completed using the Web forms, handwritten applications will not be accepted • use the full page allowances • start as soon as possible before the deadline Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

Fall Competitions Advice • Emphasize your achievements (communications, articles, all forms of scientific dissemination); • Do not sollicit letters of recommendation at the last minute. • Read the evaluation criteria and corresponding indicators in the program regulations; • Do not forget that an excellent academic record cannot, on its own, give the maximum possible score; • Present a copy of your application to your referees and ask for comments. If you receive offers from FRSQ and CIHR… • FRSQ: 2 yrs masters + 3 yrs PhD • CIHR: 1 yr masters + 3 yrs PhD • FRSQ: • $15,000 masters, • $20,000 PhD • Except for health professional programs (higher) • CIHR: • Master’s: $17,500 • Doctoral (Regular): $21,000 + $1,000 r.a. • Doctoral (CGS): $30,000 + $5,000 r.a. • Fellowship for health professionals (higher) Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
