  2. The Internet: A Global Network • Remember the Internet is the largest computer network in the world! • Internet Service Provider (ISP) – an organization that provides user access to the Internet, usually charging a subscription fee

  3. The Internet: A Global Network • The Internet is used for the following activities: • Communications • E-mail – allows user to create, send, receive, save, and forward messages in electronic form; most widely used Internet application • Chat rooms • Instant messaging • Blogs

  4. The Internet: A Global Network • Entertainment • Online games (World of Warcraft most popular in world) • Online gambling • Music and video • Electronic commerce (e-commerce) – Internet exchange of business information, products, services, and payments

  5. The Internet: A Global Network • Research • Distance learning – back and forth electronic transfer of information and course materials between learning institutions and students

  6. Types of Internet Connections • Dial-up access • Local area network (LAN) • Cable modem • DSL • Wireless • Satellite

  7. Navigating the Internet • Surfing – accessing and moving about the Internet using a web browser • Web browser – is an application that finds Web pages and displays them on the computer screen • Ex) Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox

  8. Navigating the Internet • Web browsers locate material on the Internet using Internet Protocol (IP) addresses • 207.171.181.16 • Since remembering IP numbers would be difficult, every computer also has a corresponding Web address called a uniform resource locator (URL)

  10. Respecting the Internet Community • Netiquette – collection of rules and guidelines that define good Internet behavior • It is based on the Golden Rule

Respecting the Internet Community • Ten Basic Rules of Netiquette • Include a subject line which reflects the content • Be clear and concise; try to limit words to what can be seen on one computer screen • Do not use ALL CAPS • Use proper business English, no abbreviations, and use emoticons sparingly • Check spelling and grammar

Respecting the Internet Community • Ten Basic Rules of Netiquette (con’t) • Ask before you send an attachment to someone • Do not send personal information, passwords, or sensitive/questionable information via email • Don’t type anything on your screen that you would not tell someone face-to-face • Always minimize, compress, or zip large files before sending • Verify anything you forward as true and delete all of the other email addresses in the heading

After Activity • You can tell a lot by looking at the domain of an website address:.com - commercial site.mil - military address.gov - government site.edu - educational address.org - non-profit organization site*Locate an example of each type of website on the Internet. List your 5 example websites on Module.
