  3. Kinds of technology in libraries: • Library Websites • Electronic Resources • Proxy servers • Integrated Library System • Institutional repositories • Staff and public PCs • Laptops • Social media sites

  4. What could go wrong? • Power outages and surge • Computer viruses • Denial of service attack • Data corruption • Key staff retirements • No Documentation • Vendor abandonment

  5. A Cautionary Tale: • Second largest university in New Jersey with 17,000 students • Sprague Library holds 550,000 books and 2,000 periodicals • Subscribes to over 70 online databases with access to over 30,000 online journals • Collects and maintains digital collections and purchased or licenses over10,000 ebooks and streaming videos.

  6. Technology Disaster Strikes! • Montclair Electronic Text Archive (META) server does not restart after AC outage.

  7. What went wrong with META? • Aging server equipment with no automatic temperature controlled shutoff. • Key systems staff just retired. • No documentation for system restore. • No testing of data reload from backup. • No budget for replacing old server.

  8. We need a plan! • Inventory with Risk Assessment for each item. • Risk Prevention Procedures • Restoration Procedures • Disaster Response Communications • Testing and Training Recommendations • Schedules Review and Plan Updates
