Examples of Names: • Abram (exalted father) was renamed Abraham (father of a multitude) (Gen 17:5) • Isaac (laughter) was named to reflect the laughter of his mother at birth (Gen 21:6) • Esau (hairy) was so named because of his physical appearance (Gen 25:25) • Jacob (supplanter) was so named because he grabbed his brother's heel (Gen 25:26) • Jacob later renamed Israel (God strives) because he strove with God – and man had prevailed (Gen 32:28) • God revealed Himself Jehovah (I AM WHO I AM)

Descriptive Titles of God's People • Church (1 Cor 1:2) • “ekklesia” – “call out” • “ek” – “out of” or “from” • “kalw” – “call” • More meaning than a mere assembly • Used in reference to state officials – senate • Used in reference to a “gathering” in honor of a god • Means our OFFICIAL office for the Master • Importance (Acts 20:28) • Purpose – to do God's purpose (Luke 2:49)
