  1. Should Felons have the right to vote?

  2. Felons Voting • 14 states in the U.S. do not automatically restore voting rights to ex-felons. • One in every four African American men in every state cannot vote. www.conservativecartoons.com

  3. Thesis Statement • Felons should have the right to vote because they are a citizen of this country and should not be denied that right they’ve had since the time they turned 18.

  4. History of the Issue • All throughout history this controversy has been up. Different people have different views on this subject on whether felons, parolees, or probationers should get their right to vote restored to them. Some people believe that if you were incarcerated, or put on probation, or on parole then you should not get your right to vote.

  5. History • A federal appellate court grants more than 600,000 former felons in Florida a federal trial to challenge the state's ban of felon’s voting rights. • The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta said the state must prove the 1968 Legislature did not discriminate against blacks when it slightly amended a post Civil War law barring felons from voting. • (Restoration of voter’s rights)

  6. History • The government wants to keep the felons from voting because they know it would become only one party and they don’t want that. The fact of the matter is the government or anyone else can just take ones voting right just because of something that happened in the past.

  7. Current Debate • As said before the current debate is; the government wants to keep two parties and if they restore the voting right to felons then it would change that dramatically.

  8. Current Event • Eighty percent responding to a July 2002 Harris poll said felons should have their rights restored automatically; 60 percent would include current parolees, too.

  9. Opposite View • Felons shouldn’t be able to vote • If they’re locked up, all of their rights should be taken. • Being behind bars means that you have no more freedom • Some governments think if felons are given the right to vote, they’ll corrupt the system

  10. Our View • It’s wrong to take a right everyone should have • Committing a crime doesn’t mean you lose every right you once had • Voting is a right we had to fight for, especially blacks today • The people of the U.S don’t realize that that if felons had the right to vote, it would change our government completely. It would go from a republican party to a democratic one in an instant. If a felon agreed with the republican’s views then after he went to jail he would have changed his views completely.

  11. Facts • Statistics show that one in every 4 black males cannot vote .13% of African American men are denied the right to vote. • Incarceration is up over 600% (1974) • The chance of an African American male going to prison is almost 30% higher than a white man. • (word press)

  12. Facts cont’d • An estimate 10-20 people petition the governor each week and only about 100 petitions are approved each year. There have been attempts to change the petition process in Virginia but it has failed. There was a recent poll done to see how people felt about this and 80% of the people said that felons should have this right 60% would include current paroles. • (ask. com)

  13. Facts cont’d • People on parole or probation are still denied the right to vote. • In 48 states prison imamates are denied, parolees are denied in 33 states and in 29 states people on probation are denied. • People say that voting is not a privilege, it is the basic right that defines a citizen. • (ask. com)

  14. Thesis Restated • Felons should have the right to vote because they are a citizen of this country and should not be denied that right they’ve had since the time they turned 18.

  15. The Future • In the future this issue would probably be the same because most people don’t realize the importance of having all of our citizens being able to vote.
