Chapter 2 – Read I Cor. 9:24-27 (CEV) • Self-Discipline: Running for EternalRewards(The Maxwell Leadership Bible) • Paul, the leader, challenges his readers to run the Christian life with focus (v.24) • train (v. 25) – This refers to months of severe training before a contest of wrestling or fighting with an opponent. • See contrast between corruptible and incorruptible crown

Chapter 2 – I Cor. 9:24-27 (CEV) • compete with passion and fight with purpose (v. 26) - Paul claims to be running the race to win, and fighting the fight for the knockout blow. • Fight with absolute confidence in victory. • master their flesh (v. 27) – Keep the body under and bring it into subjection. • To strike one under the eye; to beat black and blue.

Chapter 2 – I Cor. 9:24-27 (CEV) • This is Paul’s explanation of how he was boxing. • Figuratively speaking, he was not boxing, but beating his body black and blue to bring it into slavery lest he should become a castaway (Christless and literally rejected). • He considered his body an enemy with which he must contend in moral combat to keep it under control by self-denial, abstinence, and severe mortification.

Chapter 2 – I Cor. 9:24-27 (CEV) • He acted to keep the body a slave to the soul. • Not permitting the soul to be the slave of the body. • He did this constantly lest after he had preached to others he would become a castaway. • Paul asks, If athletes work to get a trophy, why not we who receive eternal rewards?
