Motivation • After series of motivational courses conducted for students at faculty, average grade for introductory computer programming course was B- • The grade is not so convincing for industry (38% unemployment, Adnan 2007) • SIG of Computer Science Education & Programming initiated at faculty level to tackle the problem.   3. Objective To investigate the relationship between learning attitudes and performance in programming course Focus Learning attitudes focused on confidence, liking and perception on importance of programming Measuring Learning Attitudes Towards Computer Programming

  4. Instrument Instrument consist of 20 questions using Likert-type statements. (William et. Al, 2002) with Cronbach alpha value = 0.889 Sample Survey was conducted to 126 students from various programs at the faculty undertakings introductory programming course. Instrument • Distribution of questions: • Confidence level towards computer programming (6 questions) • Perception towards importance of programming (6 questions) • Likings towards programming (8 questions) • Survey duration ~ 5-10 minutes • Conducted at end of semester Jan- Apr 07 Measuring Learning Attitudes Towards Computer Programming

Conclusion • No significant correlation between confidence level and performance in programming (p-value 0.220) • Positive correlation between programming grades on both : • perception on importance of learning programming (p-value 0.01) and • liking programming (p-value 0.001) Measuring Learning Attitudes Towards Computer Programming

  7. Conclusion • The findings reveals that : • Students must be made aware of the importance of programming skill • Students will be more motivated if they like the course/subject • (see also Sayang , 2004 and Azwina, 2005) Measuring Learning Attitudes Towards Computer Programming
