  1. BUSINESS LAW 904 Legal Study Tour

  2. WASHINGTON D.C. • APRIL 21-24, 2007 • Fly with me to Washington D.C. to watch the United States Supreme Court in action. • Visit with an Iowa Senator or Congressman.

  3. Course Description • The student will participate in a supervised tour, location to be announced, where time will be spent touring Washington D.C. or other government center to see first hand how branches of the United States Government run, from the history of this country to current legal policies and procedures.

  4. U.S. Supreme Court Last year the case before the U.S. Supreme Court involved the 6th Amendment and whether a judge alone could sentence a convicted 1st Degree Murderer under Arizona law.

  5. Grading Criteria – 1 Credit Hour Your grade will be based on the following items: • Four reading assignments (10 pts. Each) • Participating on 4 activities while on the trip (100 points each) • Observe US Supreme Court • National Archives • Visit Congressman or Senator • Tour of Capitol Building • Writing a Trip Journal (100 points)

  6. Proposed Itinerary • Leave Des Moines International Airport: Saturday, April 21, 2007 • Saturday and Sunday: sightseeing • Monday or Tuesday a.m: US Supreme Court • Monday or Tuesday p.m: Meet with Congressional representative – observe Congress in action. Leave Tuesday, April 24, 2007

  7. Costs • Air: $300 • Hotel: $150/night plus tax of 12-15% You will share a room with 2-3 students. The actual cost of a room in Washington D.C. is approx. $200 - $300 per night. • Transportation to and from airport – Metro - $2 each way. • Food: ??? • Souvenirs: ??? • All Smithsonian Museums and Govt. building are free • $300 to Susan Mitchell, Building 8, Rm 14 by January 29, 2007. Balance due on March 29, 2007. Approx. balance will be $300.
