The reason for diabetes research • Diabetes causes many problems, ranging from amputations, to deaths, to serious illnesses, and even blindness. • Statistics say: • 25.8 million children and adults in the U.S. have diabetes. • Of these, 68% of heart diseases were linked to diabetes. • Risk of stroke is doubled or even quadrupled with people who have diabetes. • Conditions such as hyperglycemia cause many of the problems among people with diabetes.

  3. Hyperglycemia (the problem being addressed) • Occurs when there are high levels of glucose in the blood. • This is caused by an intake of excess sugar. In other words, eating too many sweets without enough insulin to accommodate the glucose. • This causes many health issues and in some cases even death. • 55% of hospital consultant episodes with diabetes were linked to hyperglycemia.
