  3. Why did the Irish immigrate? • The Irish immigrated due to a potato blight. • A potato blight is when the plants rot. • 750,000 people died of starvation. • The Irish mainly depended on potatoes, so when the potatoes went bad they had very little to eat.

When they came to America…. • The Irish were multiplying rapidly, causing jobs to be underpaying, and very rare to find. • The economy was diminishing as the Irish came. • A phrase “No Irish Need Apply” • Unlike the Irish, many Germans had enough money to journey to the Midwest in search of farmland and work.
