  2. Lexington • -British send 700 troops to Concord to seize arms and capture colonial leaders • -Five miles from Concord is Lexington • -77 minutemen are waiting in Lexington to stop the British British order them to go home minutemen say no!

  3. A SHOT • A shot rings out! • No one knows who fired! • Becomes the shot that opens the American revolution and is called: • THE SHOT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD • *British men kill 8 minutemen directly following the first shot

  4. Concord • A larger battle • 400 minutemen versus the British- 3 British are killed in Concord • As the British retreat toward Boston, 4000 Americans fire at them from behind trees and fences! By the time the British reach Boston almost 300 of them are killed or wounded

The Second continental congress • Philadelphia, PA = May 1775 • Becomes essentially America’s government • Delegates of note: Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, Ben Franklin • Form an army Choose George Washington as the commander of the newly formed Continental arm. • Started to print paper money to pay for its army. • Offer an Olive Branch Petition • to try to make peace didn’t work

  8. More on the second continental Congress • Continental Congress realizes that independence has become unavoidable • Decide to postpone an official decision until all delegates can get approval to vote. • Decide to meet in July!! ( you should know this) • In the meantime…..

Escalation • Parliament votes to send 20,000 soldiers to the colonies to end the revolt • -Fort Ticonderoga a daring band of colonists led by Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys seize the British fort which controlled the waterways from Canada to the Hudson River Valley and housed many cannons
